1. The Pem, Westminster
Location: Westminster
Address: 22-28 Broadway, London SW1H 0BH
Price Range: £110 for the tasting menu, excluding wine pairing
Located inside the Conrad St. James, The Pem is an independent culinary outpost, tucked away in the hotel's 5-star continues. Head Chef, Sally Abé has dreamt up an incredibly refined menu, showcasing the best of seasonal ingredients. Pem, was the moniker of suffragette Emily Wilding Davison, with the namesake restaurant paying homage to her trailblazing feminism.
A deep red colour palette, plush carpets and moody lighting make up the aesthetic, which sets the tone for decadence.
The restaurant's tasting menu, Taste Of The Pem, is available Tuesday-Saturday. This is a selection of standout dishes from the main menu, handpicked for a robust flavour experience. At the time of our visit, menu highlights included a refreshing starter of tomato consommé with wild Scottish cherries, a succulent roast Herdwick lamb cannon and a punchy lemon meringue.
Texture is a big thing here, with each dish offering something unique. Whether it be the satisfying crunch of the crispy veal sweetbread or the gentle pop of preserved blackberries, every presentation detail has been meticulously considered. All of the plates feature a unique combination of elements, but together, they work in perfect harmony. Portions are generous for a tasting menu. With the addition of warm, fluffy bread (with whipped butter and garlic oil) and an amuse-boucheoffering at the start, you can expect to be sufficiently full by the meal's end.
The wine pairing is optional for this offering, but highly recommended. The venue's sommelier is wonderfully knowledgeable, taking the time not only to explain the tasting notes, but to give background information on the producers and history behind each bottle.
The Pem has solidified itself as a friendly fine-dining institution with serious culinary chops. It has been marked as a must-visit for anyone looking to expand their horizons in London's food scene.
As the sister venue to The Table's first outpost in Southwark, its relatively new south London location couldn't be any more fitting. Sun-drenched, dog-friendly brunches in the day shifts to laidback yet sophisticated ambience in the evening — this is a restaurant which can really do it all.
While The Table is arguably known for their daytime menu, the nighttime offering at Battersea is not to be overlooked. The menu is designed to share, with a sumptuous selection of nibbles, small plates, burgers and desserts. The burrata and sun-dried tomato pesto is wonderfully creamy and savoury, (best served spread across a piece of sourdough toast), while a serving of the sweet and sour chicken wings is a must for anyone who enjoys a gentle yet moreish heat on the spice front. On the seafood side, grilled prawns with garlic and chilli oil are melt-in-your-mouth delicate, while the calamari is crispy and perfectly-cooked. A serving of the parmesan and truffle oil fries are not to be foregone for a side, piled high with cheese and dripping with flavour. With all the variety, it's tricky to nail down the exact cuisine, though there is an evident Mediterranean influence. Rest assured it's the kind of restaurant where you can't order incorrectly, so every dish is a deliciously sure bet.
Wash everything down with your choice of a tantalising signature cocktail. The Soda-licious is the venue's take on a paloma and is equal parts punchy and refreshing, while the Purple Mule is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a slightly sweeter tipple.
Happy hour runs from 5-7pm, making the perfect case for a post-work treat or pre-dinner aperitif. Day or night, there is plenty to love about The Table, so a dinner booking comes highly recommended when visiting London's south.
Nestled in Shoreditch, The Clove Club is a Michelin-starred establishment celebrated for its modern European cuisine. Their commitment to seasonal, locally sourced ingredients ensures a fresh, authentic dining experience. The tasting menu showcases a thoughtful selection of contemporary European flavors, each dish expertly crafted to highlight the quality of ingredients. From tantalising tacos to flavourful mole, the menu showcases a wide array of Mexican delights. Critics applaud the restaurant's ability to balance bold flavours with visually stunning presentations, providing a feast for both the palate and the eyes. Known for its bold and spicy dishes, the menu draws inspiration from old family recipes, delivering a rich collection of small plates.
