In the Stubai Valley within Tyrol, about 20 minutes from Innsbruck, lies this five-star property in a discreet part of the Tyrolean villages.

Evoking a rustic charm, the hotel has kept its country-style interiors on purpose, in order to capture the zeitgeist of the 80’s. This is readily apparent within the main reception and dining areas of the hotel, which are decked out in full Alpine interiors.

The hotel

It was lovely to enjoy an authentic Alpine escape high up in the mountains (994 m above sea level, to be exact). We were offered a welcome drink before being shown to our Kessel Suite (one of their seven suites including family suites).

Our Suite offered 85 square meters of space, with reclaimed wood and oak throughout. It had a traditional Tyrolean farmers stove (used to heat the suite) and a separate bedroom with its own bunk bed and ensuite shower, in addition to the main bathroom area.

The suite provided a hotel-apartment offering during our three nights at Jagdhof, which allowed us to enjoy evening time by the warmth of the stove whilst our kids were sound asleep in their own bedroom.

Our time was spent exploring the property, with our son participating in a horse riding experience which the hotel organises during the week. We were also lucky enough to experience a two-hour private family spa in one of Jagdof's spa suites — something we highly recommend.

The spa

The spa suite felt like our own private cabin where we could completely relax and make full use of the sauna and steam room, in complete privacy. For families making a trip to Salzburg, this hotel is a unique one to add to the list, as both parents and children can enjoy spa time as a family.

The hotel is known for its extensive spa facilities, offering 3000 square meters of wellness and wellbeing spaces including its Vitality World, Spa Chalet’s and its Private Spa Suite. It also offers a comprehensive list of treatments and nutrition plans for those who are serious about undergoing a full detox program.

Set over two floors, the hotel’s Vitality World includes unique spaces such as their relaxation area , an aqua meditation space where you're able to release tension with the aid of music and color, and a Laconium, which is a type of ancient Roman heating treatment. There's also the Spa Fountain, Youth Whirlpool, Finnish Sauna and Amethyst Steam Grotto, which is a health promoting bathing experience surrounded by amethysts crystals. Other notable spaces include a Salt Inhalation Grotto, Ice Fountain, and Herbal Sauna. In short, the facilities are endless and are worth coming here for alone.

I spent most of my time at the spa's Tepidarium — an immune system bathing experience that is set to 39 degrees celsius and offers pure relaxation.

One could easily spend three nights here enjoying every wellness facility and going home fully refreshed. As we were with our children, we weren’t able to enjoy all of the facilities that we had hoped, but it was enough to feel relaxed and recharged by the end of our stay.

The kids club

Parents will be pleased to know that Jagdof has a kids club which is suitable for toddlers and younger children. Inside, the club is is overflowing with fun toys and creative activities to keep them occupied.

The dining

In terms of dining at Jagdhof, the culinary level was exceptional and is worthy of the five-star standard.

As with many resorts in Salzburg, guests are put on a half board meal plan which includes breakfast and dinner. Each evening, guests are offered something different based on the hotel's three dining concepts: J Cuisine (traditional, classic and regional), J Balance (elevated nutrition, low carb and more vegetables), and J Gourmet (exceptional fine-dining cuisine). The best part? You're able to pick and choose your starter, mains and desserts whilst heading over to the buffet area to pick your breads, condiments and other culinary delights.

The verdict

Jagdhof Spa Hotel is an ideal choice for those visiting Salzburg and seeking a more traditional style of a hotel, with a discreet focus on wellbeing. It is one of the only hotels we visited that had an extensive wellness offering with unique facilities. It’s not just your typical sauna, steam room and infinity pools, but rather, it embraces traditional and holistic treatments that are definitely worth exploring.
