A relative newcomer on Lake Como’s property scene is a standout choice for anyone seeking a taste of the good life.
As a boutique hotel in one of the world's most coveted locations, MUSA Lago Di Como has become a fast favourite among travellers seeking a restorative stay.
The History Of The Hotel
Situated in the Sala Comacina village, MUSA is a convenient 30 minute drive from the main town of Como.
The property is owned by Australian travel and hospitality entrepreneur, Claire Grey. Having opened in June 2022, the hotel is still quite new, especially when you consider the heritage status of several hotels in the surrounding area. That being said, its five-star rating is even more impressive given its newcomer status.
Interior Design
The overall vibe of the hotel is modern, functional and minimal. Each room leans into earthy tones, with warm lighting and understated artworks evoking a sense of calm from the moment you enter.
The hotel leans into technology in a considered manner, meaning guests seeking modernity will love it here. Access codes are used to enter rooms as opposed to physical key cards and check-in can be done online prior to arriving in a bid to save time. These details make the world of difference and give the property an upscale edge.
Overall, MUSA’s sleek and refined aesthetic combines the best of the new age with the power of the lake’s old world allure.
The Rooms
With twelve rooms in total, the hotel has a very boutique look and feel, which we loved.
We were lucky enough to stay in the grand suite, which is located on the top floor. From the minute the door opened, we were blown away by the exquisite view of the lake. Given the hotel is right by the water’s edge, every room has been designed to maximise exposure to the view. You can sit outside on the balcony or enjoy it indoors from the comfort of an armchair. Wherever you are sitting, there are opportunities to soak it all in.
The foot of the bed housed an ottoman storage bench, but one click of a remote had a generous flat screen TV rising up from within it. I loved this feature as it meant we could enjoy a movie night, but didn't have the ambience of the room impacted by a big TV. I also discovered a few fun accessories inside my bedside table, including a JBL speaker and massage gun.
The bathroom size was very generous and contained a deep bathtub, freestanding shower, double sinks and enclosed toilet room. The marble countertops and black fixtures gave everything a very slick, chic feel.
It’s worth noting that the hotel also offers a private property known as Villa MUSA. This is available for larger groups or anyone seeking added seclusion to rent in its entirety. Fitted with its own infinity pool, jacuzzi, pool table and cinema room, this offering is the pinnacle of luxury.
The Drinks and Dining
Given that the hotel is run by two acclaimed chefs, it will come as no surprise that food is a major drawcard here. Robert Moretti and Matteo Corridori were born and raised in Lake Como, which is made clear in the creation of their thoughtful menus. Mediterranean cuisine and local produce are front and centre at ROTEO, whose tasting menu is an edible ode to the area. These menus change according to seasonality, but the ‘Aqva’ offering is a definitive favourite for its innovative use of sea life, ranging from crustaceans and fresh fish to marine plankton.
We enjoyed a few cocktails at the hotel’s GAIA bar which was a wonderful way to begin our evening. The cocktail menu is one of the most inventive I’ve seen. Each drink is inspired by a different woman who has been a notable historical figure (think Margaret Thatcher, Rosa Parks, Coco Chanel and Virginia Woolf). These women are the muse behind their eponymous drink, whose unique flavour profiles pay homage to various parts of their life.
As someone who prefers drinks with a savoury slant, I appreciated the chart detailing the drink’s levels of bitter, sweet, acid and spiced. The mixologist’s are also eager to guide you and will present an overview of the woman you’ve chosen and how it relates to the tasting notes.
I ordered an Amelia Earhart in honour of the American aviation pioneer. As she was born in Kansas, the tipple contained maize, along with spice from Central America and Mexican Mescal in tribute to one of her famous flight routes. A bubble of salty foam acted as a garnish, which was a clever nod to her groundbreaking work as a pilot. My partner ordered the Eva Peron which had a creamy banana taste, in honour of the politician’s Argentinian roots.
We were kindly given a board of upscale snacks to enjoy alongside our drinks. These were delicious, but the ricotta and smoked salmon was our mutually-agreed standout.
The Amenities
It goes without saying that you’ll want to spend plenty of time at the outdoor pool which boasts expansive views of the surrounding Alps. It can't be overstated how beautiful this area is.
While relaxation is high on the priority list, those looking to break a sweat can visit the open air gym for some exercise. Its setup is ideal for the summer months, and the stationary bike facing toward the lake means you don’t have to forgo a minute without taking in that spectacular view. Underneath the gym you can find a sauna and steam room, with additional treatment room for massages.
MUSA is passionate about tailoring your entire experience from beginning to end. They will happily organise car transfers, restaurant reservations, boat tours, beauty services, cooking classes and outdoor activities around the lake.
Of course, nobody could blame you for staying within MUSA’s walls for the duration of your stay. After all, when it’s this good, why leave?
