A good mascara is probably the most important thing in my make-up bag.

However, finding the right mascara for the occasion is not always that simple. It can feel like a minefield, particularly given the number of options that are now on the market, everything from mascaras that give you volume and length to others which promise growth and definition. I’m not really a fan of waterproof mascara, I like to be able to wash it off with a good facial cleanser, so this is always the first test for me. Secondly it’s about finding the best mascara for the effect you are after, and as with the hair on our head, lashes come in different textures and colours, so there isn’t any such thing as a one-size-fits-all mascara.

I’ve done a little digging around to find some luxury mascara brands that you may not have heard of, and with a little trial and error I have put my top six together.

Lash Perfect Black Mascara with Lash Enhancing Serum - £23.95

Lash Perfect Black Mascara with Lash Enhancing Serum combines a high-quality mascara with an enhancing peptide, which promises to give up to a 35% increase in lash density within 6 weeks. This helps to improve the condition of lashes, giving the appearance of increased length and thickness. I definitely found that this mascara lengthened my lashes and it didn’t smudge during the day.

Lash Perfect

Rapidglam™ Lash Enhancing Mascserum - £32.00

This mascserum is a balanced blend of the iconic RapidLash Eyelash Enhancing Serum and a new smooth, fibre infused 2-in-1 primer and mascara RapidGlam™. The creamy, clump-free, blackest of black formula coats your lashes in strand-loving ingredients that condition and enhance lashes for a curlier, stronger, fuller look in as little as 6 weeks. I really loved the brush of this mascara which ensures your lashes are separate and intensely black, whilst the added fibre adds volume, taking your lashes from natural to glam in no time.

Rapid Lash

Shiro Kombu Mascara - £38.00

This mascara definitely ticks the luxury box. Not only are your lashes lengthened with this gagome kombu-enriched mascara, but the formula is scented with yuzu oil, which smells gorgeously fresh. It has a comb type brush which separates each lash for a glamorous look and it also washes off easily with warm water - which to me is a total bonus.

Skinchemists Glam Volume / Ultra Thickening Mascara £59 / £49

For those who have never heard of Skin Chemist, this is an innovative, ingredient-led skincare brand whose formulations contain proven to work ingredients with a variety of products suitable for a range of skin concerns. Their Glam Volume Mascara is the total effect formulation and gives the perfect look of longer and thicker lashes. The ultra thickening mascara formulation uses cold press seed and Argan Oil for the healthy, nutritious and full look. This is the perfect mascara for those with more sensitive eyes.

Skin Chemists

Dr Hauschka Volume Mascara - £21.00

With the help of a special brush, this Volume Mascara condenses individual lashes into a thick fan. The mineral pigments can be applied in straight strokes or zig-zag movements to create expressive lashes and provide valuable eyelash care. Every Dr. Hauschka mascara is ophthalmologically tested and is suitable for sensitive eyes as well as for contact lens wearers.

Dr Hauschka

Mádara Brow & Lash Booster - £22.25

This isn’t actually a mascara, but I wanted to include it in the list as I think it’s something every woman should have in their make-up bag. Rich in peptides, caffeine, natural biopolymers and growth vitamin-bursting extract of Northern Chanterelle, this double-action clear look mascara recharges your eyebrows and lashes with volume, length and shine, promoting a fuller, bolder and healthier look. MADARA is also launching a new mascara very soon, called Deep Matter, which is rich in plant-derived peptides, natural deep black pigment and castor oil to nourish lashes - so make sure you watch out for that.
