The W Hotels of the mid-2000s felt disruptive and boundary-pushing. Today's W Hotel is more about mature, laid-back refinement. This updated philosophy was very much in evidence at the W Maldives on a recent visit.

Perched on Fesdu Island in the North Ari Atoll, W Maldives is a calm oasis where refinement and playfulness sit side by side. Baldwin Ho unpacks the island resort, exploring everything from the interiors to activities such as swimming with sharks.

This year the resort is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Even with such a legacy behind it, the property feels as fresh as ever thanks to a full 10-month renovation back in 2025. They've revolutionised the concept of Maldivian luxury over the years, having pioneered the "pier welcome", which sees guests personally greeted the moment they reach the dock area.

Formalities are reserved for the private seaplane lounge in Malé, allowing guests to bypass the traditional front desk reception experience and seamlessly segue to their villas.

Vibrant Villas With Playful Aesthetics

The island is naturally heart-shaped and compact, making all villas within easy walking distance of facilities and restaurants. They have an "Above and Below the Water" design philosophy, whereby the beachfront and overwater villas are interconnected with their natural surroundings. The "Below" Overwater Villas have distinct marine design motifs. You'll find patterns connected to the neighbouring coral reefs and majestic whale sharks, such as tiny mosaic tiles in the infinity pools that mimic whale shark skin patterns.

The "Above" Beachfront Villas, meanwhile, channel the lush greenery of the island. You'll find tropical flora and organic shapes that echo the local mangroves and intricate root systems.

Using sustainable materials and natural tones is also a key focus for the resort. The overwater villas feature glass floor panels, offering guests a truly unique way to spot the occasional marine creature floating underneath. Beyond this, the villas have an open-plan layout and floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a generous space that lends itself well to Maldivian sunsets.

Elevated Dining Experiences

The restaurants and bars at W Maldives might have minimalist names: FISH, FIRE, KITCHEN and SIP, but the execution is an elevated and refined affair. KITCHEN is the resort's main bistro and serves up an extensive breakfast spanning the Maldives, Europe, Asia, and beyond. At their live station, expect to find myriad exotic fruits including mangosteen and papaya. With locals passionate about their tuna, you'll also find Maldivian tuna mashuni pide served up at their buffet.

FISH is a striking overwater restaurant that offers mesmerising ocean views and a seafood-forward menu that focuses on serving up a catch-of-the-day. It's worth keeping your eyes peeled as you may also witness marine life underneath the restaurant, including blacktip reef sharks and stingrays. Dishes on the menu include local steamed Fesdu reef fish, coral-kissed octopus, and vegetarian options such as paneer steak. A note of caution, portion sizes can be very generous.

FIRE is their signature smokehouse and barbecue restaurant. Come here for a slice of theatre and extravagance in the form of Australian grass-fed golden tomahawk cooked on their Josper grill in an open kitchen. At 1.5kg, this is a main course designed for sharing, unless you have developed a significant appetite during the day from active water sports and wish to tackle it solo. The secret to their success is about sourcing the very best ingredients, from the juiciest tiger prawns to ultra-tender steaks. They also offer a Reef to Grill buffet night on selected evenings, allowing guests to feast on all manner of culinary delights.

SIP is the sunset cocktail bar perfect for soaking up golden hour. Aesthetics aside, it encapsulates the new W philosophy with its choice of sophisticated lounge beats over loud party music. They offer perfectly crafted cocktails along with Nikkei bites to keep you sated before dinner. Their vegan sushi selection is particularly commendable, notably their roasted red bell pepper that looks remarkably like tuna sushi.

Swimming With Sharks

If you're seeking an unforgettable bucket list experience, we'd recommend booking the nurse shark snorkelling excursion. For decades, sharks have been misunderstood creatures, owing in part to sensationalised Hollywood films. During this experience, you'll quickly learn that nurse sharks are in fact the "gentle giants" of the sea. They are slow-moving, calm, bottom-dwellers and often called the "puppy dogs of the seas" in light of their docile temperament.

Even beginner snorkelers will feel instantly at ease as curious nurse sharks glide up close to brush past. Nurse sharks aside, you'll also likely glimpse stingrays and other reef fish that support this vibrant ecosystem. Another highlight? The experienced staff carry a GoPro to capture your best moments, ensuring participants can fully immerse themselves in the experience.

Award-winning House Reef

If the deep sea doesn't sound appealing, consider snorkelling around their award-winning house reef. In a leading travel award, they've won the Best House Reef category for the last three consecutive years. One of the key draws is the unmatched proximity and access. The reef wraps closely around the island, and swimming just a few strokes from your villa deck will land you in the heart of the action.

The coral is in great health, transforming the seabed into a forest of vibrant colour. Notably, they've also partnered with MARS Sustainable Solutions to plant 6,000 coral fragments across 400 square metres to ensure these coral beds continue to flourish. With an exceptional diversity of marine life on display, expect to spot vast schools of colourful reef fish, resident eagle rays and sea turtles, including the ever-popular resident, Bob. If you are not a conservationist at heart, you will be by the end of your experience.

Unique Experiences

The resort specialises in offering unique experiences that resonate with the W audience. Recently, they had an Island Alchemy pop-up with Hiroyasu Kayama of Bar Benfiddich in Tokyo. He is widely regarded as "Japan's Greatest Bartender" and focuses on a farm-to-glass cocktail experience and herbal elixirs. His cocktails often feature artisan spirits such as KI NO BI Kyoto Dry Gin, which is usually paired with a minty, citrusy shiso leaf.

They also have a private island dubbed Gaathafushi Island for those seeking a castaway experience. Whilst it is only a five-minute speedboat ride away from the main Fesdu Island resort, they have retained its untouched, desert island vibe with perfect white-sand beaches and turquoise lagoons. Guests can visit for day trips, private dining or even overnight experiences. The only visitors you might encounter are the curious ghost crabs and sea swallows.

Beyond this, guests can also relive their childhood via the resort's iconic waterslide. Created by acclaimed British design studio SplinterWorks, the slide takes the form of a mirror-polished stainless steel stiletto, making it one of the most Instagram-famous design centrepieces you'll encounter in the Maldives.
