Sybarite Stays: LEVEN Manchester
With a home away from home feel, LEVEN Manchester offers a characterful, relaxed metropolitan stay.
A boutique hotel-cum-aparthotel, LEVEN offers just the kind of warm yet fuss-free stay you want for a quick city getaway. Housed in a smart red-brick former cotton warehouse on Canal Street, you don’t need to venture far to be in the beating heart of the action.
Style and substance come to mind; the design is inspired by the building’s industrial history. Original features from the exposed brick walls to huge Critall windows are artfully complemented by chic and contemporary touches — a green Art Deco scalloped reception desk (which doubles as a bar) greets guests, flanked by sumptuous velvet sofas to sink into. There is a community spirit at the heart of the hotel. A separate lounge features a long communal table for work or to enjoy a flat white in company. Artwork is an eclectic melange proudly celebrating local artisans and foliage reigns supreme. Guests here feel truly relaxed — rather than calling the lobby for requests, they can communicate informally via WhatsApp.
The Rooms
The industrial cool feel permeates from the lobby into the 41 rooms. Each feels like its own personal apartment — so you would be very much at home for a short or long stay.
Think: oak parquet floors, lots of polished brass and more exposed brick, lean into the industrial chic feel. High ceilings and expansive windows amplify the sense of space, while free-standing baths add a dose of indulgence. There’s personality injected through prints unique to each room and a playful selection of literature like old cookery books. Bathrooms are large with impressively powerful walk-in showers flanked by fragrant Grown Alchemist products. A fully functioning kitchen means you can happily hunker down for the night, if the lure of the city nightlife or vibrant culinary scene doesn’t pull you in. Rooms are softened with plush velvet sofas and cloud-like King Size beds. There is a well-stocked minibar with vibey snacks such as Moth cocktail cans and hummus chips. Plus, bed-side earplugs stave off the thrum of the city beyond the red brick walls.
The F&B
The lobby bar is the perfect spot to kickstart an evening exploring the city. Sink into one of the velvet sofas and enjoy one of the many playful and innovative seasonal cocktails the team shake up before your eyes. The Rhubarb Sour gets The Sybarite’s vote; a zingy and refreshing sharpener with rhubarb gin, lemon, sugar and bitters.
While there is no hotel restaurant, come morning the bar is on hand for a strong flat white and pastry. For something heartier, the location couldn’t be better. Centrally located in the Village district on buzzy Canal Street, you are a mere 5 minute walk to Piccadilly Station. There are a host of vibrant cafes and restaurants within walking distance, which the affable hotel team can point you to.
Nightly rates at LEVEN Manchester (www.liveleven.com) start from £99 in a “Life Size” room, and from £299 in a “Living The Dream” two-bedroom duplex Penthouse suite, both based on two sharing.
