In this edition of Women Who Launch, Kristyna Jandova speaks to Maria Kragmann, founder of M-KAE, about building a fashion brand rooted in quiet confidence, the influence of motherhood on her creative vision, and the art of designing pieces that transcend seasons.
At a moment when fashion is rediscovering the value of restraint, Maria Kragmann’s approach feels particularly resonant. Based in Copenhagen, M-KAE was founded in 2018 with a vision anchored in timeless design, quality, and personal style. In a landscape often defined by excess, she has chosen a more considered path, one shaped by softness, intention, and quiet confidence.
As the founder of M-KAE, Kragmann has built a brand that speaks through subtlety. Clean lines, gentle structure, and a refined sense of femininity define pieces designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday life.
Her journey into fashion did not begin with a singular turning point, but with a growing instinct to create something of her own. “M-KAE started from a very personal place,” she reflects. “I felt a strong need to create pieces that reflected how I wanted to feel, feminine, confident, and effortless.”
At the time, she was missing “a wardrobe that felt both elevated and wearable,” which ultimately became the foundation of the brand. “The vision was to build a brand rooted in timeless silhouettes and understated elegance, pieces that women could return to season after season.”
Softness Meets Structure
Today, that vision has evolved into a clearly defined aesthetic. M-KAE exists at the intersection of softness and structure, a balance Kragmann continues to refine.
“It’s about refined femininity and quiet confidence,” she explains. “It’s a balance between softness and structure, pieces that feel effortless but still intentional.”
Rather than following trends, the brand aligns with a broader shift towards longevity in luxury. “We focus on creating seasonless styles that move beyond trends, with an emphasis on quality, fit, and subtle details.”
This philosophy is closely tied to her Scandinavian background. “Scandinavian design is very much about simplicity and restraint,” she says. The influence is evident in the brand’s clean lines, muted tones, and emphasis on quality over excess. “There’s a certain calmness and balance that comes from that aesthetic.”
A Quieter Approach
The decision to launch the brand developed gradually. “It wasn’t one single moment, but rather a growing feeling that I wanted to create something that felt truly aligned with me.”
In an increasingly saturated market, Kragmann was drawn to a more understated space, one that reflects a growing desire for pieces that extend beyond the immediacy of trends. “I felt there was space for something more understated, a brand that didn’t rely on trends but instead focused on timeless pieces that feel relevant for years. Something softer, more personal, and less loud.”
That perspective continues to define M-KAE today. “It’s about creating a wardrobe that feels calm, curated, and effortless.”
Maintaining that clarity has not come without challenges. “One of the biggest challenges has been navigating growth while staying true to the brand’s identity,” she says. Her approach remains rooted in instinct. “For me, it has been about trusting my intuition and staying grounded in the vision.”
Like many founders, she has faced moments of uncertainty. “Of course. Building a brand comes with a lot of uncertainty,” she says. “For me, it has been about staying close to why I started and focusing on creating something I genuinely believe in. That clarity helps navigate the noise.”
While there have been notable milestones, the most meaningful moments remain closely tied to the women who wear the brand. “Seeing women truly connect with the brand, wearing the pieces in their everyday lives, has been the most meaningful. That’s when it feels real.”
Pieces That Last
Her design process reflects a long-term perspective increasingly valued within the luxury space. “It’s about balance,” she says. “I look at proportions, fabrics, and silhouettes that feel current, but I avoid anything that feels too trend-driven. If a piece still feels relevant a few years from now, then it’s worth creating.”
That philosophy is perhaps most clearly expressed through the brand’s signature pieces. The Sienna Cardigan, with its softly structured shoulders and gold-button detailing, has become a quiet staple. It feels polished yet inherently easy, designed to move effortlessly between occasions. Crafted from breathable cotton with a considered silhouette, it reflects the balance of comfort and refinement that defines the brand.
More recently, Kragmann has introduced fluid satin styles finished with delicate lace, from relaxed trousers to barely-there shorts. These pieces feel intimate yet versatile. They bring a subtle sensuality to the collection while remaining grounded in wearability. Designed to be styled as effortlessly at home as they are outside, they echo her instinct for clothing that adapts to the rhythm of everyday life rather than dictating it.
Inspiration is often drawn from everyday moments. “Inspiration often comes from very simple moments, light, textures, travel, and the feeling of a place.” Coastal environments remain a recurring influence. “I’m especially inspired by coastal environments, where everything feels softer and more effortless.”
Perspective and Balance
Becoming a mother marked a quiet but defining shift. “It made me more intentional and gave me the courage to build something of my own,” she says, a perspective that now informs both her work and her pace.
Her daughters also shape how she thinks about femininity and legacy. “They remind me of the softness and strength that femininity can hold at the same time,” she muses. “It also makes me think more about what I’m building, not just for now, but for the future.”
Balancing family life with the demands of a growing brand remains an evolving process. “Some days are more work-focused, others are more about family.” Rather than striving for perfection, she prioritises presence. “I try to be present in whatever I’m doing, rather than trying to do everything at once.”
Redefining Success
This mindset extends to her definition of success. “Success is about creating something that feels meaningful, both for me and for the women wearing M-KAE.”
For women considering launching their own business, her advice is grounded yet direct. “Trust your intuition and don’t wait for everything to feel perfect. Start where you are, and allow things to evolve. Building something meaningful takes time.”
Looking ahead, her focus remains on thoughtful growth. “I’m excited about continuing to grow the brand in a considered way, expanding into new markets and developing the collections further.” At the same time, her priorities remain unchanged. “Most importantly, staying true to the identity of M-KAE while evolving.”
In an industry that rarely pauses, Maria Kragmann’s commitment to restraint, clarity, and longevity feels not only refreshing, but quietly radical. It is this measured perspective that continues to define M-KAE and the women who wear it.
