Unforgettable memories await at one of Thailand’s most quietly extraordinary retreats - Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort. Perched along a mountain ridge in Northern Thailand where the borders of Laos, Myanmar and Thailand converge, the resort is a hidden gem far removed from the country’s usual tourist circuit.

Here, the magic lies not only in the sweeping views of bamboo forests and dense jungle, but also in the gentle presence of elephants roaming freely across the surrounding landscape. Unlike Thailand’s more familiar destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket or Koh Samui, this remote retreat offers something entirely different — an immersive escape into nature where adventure, discovery and meaningful experiences unfold for couples and families alike.

Our journey began with a direct flight from Singapore to Chiang Rai - a convenient three-hour journey now offered by Scoot Airlines. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by our driver who informed us that the resort was just over an hour away. The drive itself set the tone for the days ahead: quiet roads, lush countryside and an immediate sense of calm that comes with travelling somewhere less trodden.

As we arrived at the resort, the sound of ceremonial drums greeted us - a warm and theatrical welcome that immediately signalled we had arrived somewhere special. We were escorted into the expansive open-air lobby, where thoughtful design and storytelling decor evoked the feeling of stepping into an explorer’s tale.

The Suites

Our family stayed in the Mekong Explorer Family Suite, and its scale and design instantly impressed us. The suite features two interconnected bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms - an ideal arrangement for families seeking both comfort and privacy. Decorated with rich wooden textures and explorer-inspired details, the space exuded a refined safari aesthetic.

Awaiting us inside was a thoughtfully-prepared welcome: a selection of canapés placed atop a vintage-style drinks trolley, while our children were delighted to discover elephant-shaped butter cookies they could decorate themselves. Small touches like these set the tone for the warm hospitality we would experience throughout our stay.

The suite itself was beautifully appointed. Each bedroom featured a large stone bathtub framed by wooden shutters, along with spacious walk-in closets, robes and slippers. A picturesque study area and a well-stocked minibar ensured every comfort was accounted for. Modern conveniences were seamlessly integrated, from charging ports to thoughtful lighting, ensuring the suite felt both luxurious and functional.

Our children were particularly fascinated by the in-room binoculars, a charming detail that allows guests to admire the nearby wandering elephants.

The Jungle Bubble and its Gentle Giants

Elephants are, of course, at the heart of the resort’s identity. The property is home to 17 rescued elephants, all cared for by their Mahouts (a traditional lifelong caretaker, trainer and handler for an elephant in Thailand) and free to roam across the surrounding 160-acre bamboo forest. Much of our time was spent simply observing them, watching their rhythms, movements and social interactions.

One of the most memorable experiences we had was “Walking with Giants.” Led by your own private knowledgeable guide, we followed the elephants through the jungle as they bathed in the river, played in the mud and leisurely grazed on bamboo. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of slowing down - an hour spent fully present in nature, away from technology and simply observing these magnificent creatures.

Another experience families will particularly enjoy is Iyara Indee, where guests prepare a gourmet fruit-and-vegetable “cake” specially designed for the elephants. Guided by the Mahouts, we chopped ingredients and assembled a colourful tower of treats before calling the elephants over to enjoy their feast. Watching them eagerly devour the creations — often within seconds — was both joyful and unforgettable.

What makes these experiences meaningful is the resort’s deeper mission. Through the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, the property actively supports elephant rescue and rehabilitation, providing a sanctuary for animals previously used in logging camps, street begging or entertainment shows.

A highlight of our stay was spending a night in one of the resort’s extraordinary Jungle Bubbles - an experience which we highly recommend.

Guests are driven from the main resort into the jungle, where a small number of transparent bubbles sit quietly amongst the trees. As a family of four, we stayed in the two-bedroom Jungle Bubble Lodge, which features two separate sleeping bubbles connected by a shared living space.

Our private host welcomed us with a tour before serving dinner on the outdoor deck as two resident elephants roamed nearby. Being able to observe them up close as they grazed, rested and wandered peacefully through the landscape felt surreal.

The afternoon unfolded slowly. We relaxed in the heated whirlpool while listening to the sounds of the surrounding jungle as dusk settled over the forest. Dinner that evening consisted of beautifully prepared Northern Thai dishes served under the open sky before we retreated to our bubble for the night.

Despite its transparent design, the bubble felt incredibly comfortable and private. Fully air-conditioned and impeccably maintained, it featured two ensuite bathrooms and a living area stocked with complimentary drinks and snacks. Every detail had been considered so that guests could simply relax and immerse themselves in the experience.

Culinary Adventures & Wellbeing

Our final days were spent enjoying the resort’s facilities, particularly the breathtaking infinity pool overlooking the jungle canopy. Afternoons passed easily with refreshing drinks and light bites served poolside.

Dining at the resort was equally memorable. Samsarn, the property’s fine-dining restaurant, celebrates the culinary traditions of the Golden Triangle region. Its open-kitchen concept allows guests to watch chefs prepare dishes while discovering the ingredients (such as local spices) and techniques behind Northern Thai cuisine.

Breakfast each morning was a highlight: a generous spread of both Western and local specialities served against sweeping jungle views. It was the perfect way to begin each day.

No stay would be complete without visiting the resort’s award-winning spa. The tranquil setting and skilled therapists made such an impression that we ended up booking two treatments during our stay. It was, quite literally, the cherry on top of four days filled with nature, adventure and meaningful family moments.

Final Verdict

Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort offers something rare - a luxury escape that feels both deeply immersive and profoundly memorable. For families seeking experiences that go beyond the ordinary, this is a destination where stories are made and memories linger long after the journey ends.
