About This Experience
Burning Man is a unique annual nine-day event held in the Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada, where a temporary community known as Black Rock City is constructed on the desert basin in Nevada, and attendees must arrive with their own survival resources, including water and food. Originating in 1986 on a San Francisco beach as a small bonfire gathering initiated by Larry Harvey and Jerry James, the event operates under a specific framework of Ten Principles, including radical self-reliance, decommodification, and leaving no trace.
Daytime temperatures can reach 38-40°C (100-105°F), so being responsible and prepared is essential. The community also emphasises civic responsibility, public welfare, and participation as a core part of Burning Man culture. The event functions without commercial sponsors or traditional retail transactions, focusing instead on a gift economy and the ways participants create the city through large-scale interactive art installations, each theme camp, every camp, mutant vehicles, and spontaneous performance art, culminating in the symbolic burning of a large wooden effigy.
