Once Churchill’s Old War Office, now one of the most luxurious wellness spaces in London.

Set in the grandiose building that was once Churchill’s Old War Office, The Guerlain Spa at Raffles London, offers a luxurious and serene experience, blending modern wellness with a touch of historic elegance. This is Raffles’ first opening in London and as soon as I arrived I was greeted with exceptional service. The entrance to the hotel is stunning, the large sweeping staircases draw your eyes inwards, framed by an impressive fresh flower display.

The doorman personally took me down to the spa, where I was greeted with a warm smile and a very incredible reception area, which included a huge backlit ‘Guerlain’ sign bathed in gold. While I waited for a friend to arrive, I was served a refreshing herbal tea, alongside a cold towel bathed in a Guerlain perfume, and my shoes were swapped with soft white fluffy slippers. Don’t forget to look up, where you will find a gorgeous ceiling, featuring carved butterflies and delicate flowers. There is also a back-lit wall holding 16 bottles of Guerlain perfumes to test. Once my friend arrived we were shown to the spa and there really is a wow factor when you see the pool for the first time.

The Guerlain Spa

As the first Guerlain Spa in the UK, it spans 27,000 sq ft across multiple floors and includes a 20-meter swimming pool, a vitality pool, and thermal suites with steam rooms and saunas. It has been designed to provide a personalised, holistic approach to wellness, with treatments that combine Guerlain's expertise in beauty with modern technology.

After changing into our swimwear and fluffy robes we found ourselves a double lounger in a cosy nook beside the pool. The service in the spa was just as exceptional as in the hotel itself, and we were straight away provided with additional towels and made to feel very welcome -  it felt like nothing was too much trouble. You are also able to help yourself to lemon and cucumber-infused water; or order cups of herbal tea by the spas hosts. The spa area was also very quiet, which was perfect and at one point we had the entire pool to ourselves, which was a real treat.

After a swim and some time in the vitality pool, we ordered ourselves a bottle of bubbly and spent some time enjoying our surroundings and taking advantage of the large steam room and sauna.

The treatments

Time seemed to disappear and it was soon time for our treatment. The Guerlain Spa has a number of Signature offerings including the "Spirit of London" massage, which incorporates LED light therapy to relieve stress and tension, and the Royal Spa Suite Journey, a three-hour experience that includes a luxurious bath, massage, and facial tailored to your preferences. I had opted for a 90 minute deep tissue massage, having been suffering with a sore shoulder. We were both collected from the pool side and taken to the treatment floor where there were a total of nine treatment rooms. Just like the rest of the spa and hotel, the rooms are luxurious, with low candle lighting, a super comfortable bed and a Guerlain scent filling the room. I drifted in and out of sleep as the experienced therapist worked on my tired muscles and the 90 minutes flew by.

Following the treatment I was led to the relaxation room which included six beds, block candles, reading lights and a selection of snacks, including delicious protein balls and herbal tea. Our plan to only spend a short amount of time in the room, was short lived once we tucked ourselves under the velvet weighted blankets. (of which we both ordered one there and then!)

Who is it for?

Anyone lucky enough to book a treatment, stay at the hotel, or reside in one of its 85 private residences can use the spa facilities, but do make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to do so. Between the Atelier, the vitality pool, the thermal spa suite, and everything else on offer, a quick jaunt just won’t do it justice. Tiered memberships are available for Pillar Wellbeing for those who want to access top-of-the-range facilities day in, day out.

The verdict

The Guerlain Spa at Raffles London offers an unparalleled spa experience, blending the rich history of its location with the cutting-edge treatments and luxurious touches that Guerlain is known for. I have been lucky enough to visit many spas in and around the UK, but The Guerlain Spa has the wow factor, steeped in history, it’s truly stunning and the service is exceptional. I, for one, will definitely be returning very soon.
