Hotel Riomar Ibiza: Balance Restored

Maria Holloway discovers a slower side of the White Isle at Riomar Ibiza, where Mediterranean plates and quiet wellness rituals reign supreme.

There are two sides to Ibiza. One is defined by beach clubs, late nights and a high-octane energy that rarely subsides. The other is quieter, characterised by mornings that begin with the sound of gentle waves, hidden coves dotted along the coast, and a pace of life shaped by wellbeing rather than nightlife. Riomar Ibiza, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, firmly leans into the latter, bringing together restorative wellness rituals alongside Mediterranean charm.

Set just 25 minutes from the airport on Ibiza's peaceful east coast in Santa Eulalia, the 116-room boutique hotel occupies a rare position where the Balearics' only river meets the Mediterranean Sea. Originally opened in the 1960s as one of the island's first hotels, the property was reimagined following a 2021 renovation, transforming the retreat into a contemporary haven centred on balance, connection and Mediterranean island life.

During my recent visit to the sugar-cube-like property, the contrast to Ibiza's livelier corners was immediately apparent. Upon arrival, sea salt hung heavy in the air, palms swayed gently overhead, and the only soundtrack was that of waves lapping against the shore below. Stepping inside, a fresh fragrance filled the open spaces, instantly conjuring up visions of an endless summer.

A Modern Masterpiece

Riomar's design mirrors its setting. Its striking, all-white exterior, evocative of the pristine beaches, is offset by its modern interiors comprising graphic, black detailing, natural woods and woven textures - a black-and-white palette that reads as clean and considered. Elsewhere, floor-to-ceiling windows dissolve the boundary between the inside and outside, flooding every corner with diffused Mediterranean light.

The Rooms

Rooms at Riomar lean into a similar, restrained aesthetic. Soft neutral tones dominate throughout, alongside black details, billowing curtains, and flashes of burnt orange. In the bathrooms, low lighting and luxurious rainfall showers stocked with fragrant products create a spa-like hush.

Mornings on the balcony were where I lingered longest, coffee in hand with the uninterrupted horizon stretching out before me. It’s the kind of view that talks you out of reaching for your phone. By sunset, the same spot transformed into a front-row seat for a game of beach volleyball that unfolded on the sand below.

Wellness Sanctuary

If there's a reason to build a trip around Riomar, it's this: wellness here isn't a treatment you book once and then forget. It feeds into every fibre of the experience.

My wellbeing journey here began before the hotel had even stirred for the day, with a barefoot jog along the sand as the sky turned from grey to gold, pausing every so often to stretch out with the tide for company. Swapping tarmac for shoreline is, in my opinion, reason enough to indulge in a wellness retreat. From there, the real work started back at the intimate Fitness Studio decked out with state-of-the-art Technogym® cardio machines, free weights, and full-length windows. Waiting at the other end were chilled water, fresh towels, and crisp apples for an added dose of luxury.

From there, I made my way to Tribe, the hotel's dedicated wellness terrace featuring a shaded wooden deck tucked beneath sail-cloth canopies, swaying palms, and festoon lights. Mats lined up in neat rows across the dark timber stood ready and waiting for the complimentary yoga classes held most mornings.

Wellness extends beyond the dedicated spaces, too. Guests staying in Premium Rooms and Suites will find Born Living Yoga mats, blocks and resistance bands in their rooms, making it just as easy to continue the practice privately from the comfort of their own balcony or terrace.

Just around the corner, tucked into its own leafy nook of banana leaves and potted palms, sits the new Lumi Therapy ice bath, with a sauna and a private massage station located nearby. Still warm from the workout, five minutes in the cold plunge gave me enough time to empty my mind completely and enter a peaceful moment of stillness. After a deep meditation, I took a quiet moment to settle on one of the blue loungers, watermelon juice in hand.

Mediterranean Flavours

Meal times follow this same philosophy of balance. Quiet mornings are complemented by replenishing breakfasts - a particularly welcome treat after an invigorating workout. Enjoyed either on the sea-facing terrace or in the quieter room beside the buffet, expect to feast on a nutrient-dense spread teeming with fresh smoked salmon, seasonal vegetables, hummus and crudités, cheeses and cured hams, fresh juices and detox smoothies, alongside fresh fruits and creamy yoghurts.

Lunch is best enjoyed at the pool cabanas. Bask in the sunshine before tucking into plates from the Mediterranean and beyond, including crisp croquettes, colourful poke bowls, soft-shell tacos, chicken caesar salads, and punchy Aperol Spritzes. By evening, Ocean Brasserie is the place to be. Acoustic guitar music drifts across the terrace, setting the tone for a decadent dinner that starts with a citrus-dressed ceviche topped with avocado and edible flowers, before leading to a grilled entrecôte with padrón peppers and mojo picón. The focus here is on honest, produce-led Mediterranean cooking that balances nourishment with indulgence.

Elsewhere, the contemporary lounge bar provides the perfect backdrop for an elegant pre-dinner cocktail or leisurely nightcap. It’s the sort of place that convinces you to stay longer than expected before you eventually retreat to your oasis of calm.

Beyond The Gates

Riomar's retreat mentality doesn't stop at the property’s gates. Santa Eulalia itself is worth exploring on foot - its marina, promenade and market stalls are just a short stroll from the hotel - while Portinatx (a 30-minute drive north) boasts dramatic clifftop walks, secluded coves and pine forest trails that peel away from the coast entirely.

An afternoon spent hiking these cliffs, followed by an evening soaking up the sunset from a secluded spot with the turquoise sea below acts as the ultimate holistic reset.

Riomar's greatest luxury arguably lies in its address - the hotel feels close enough to the island buzz but without all the noise. This sense of calm feeds into the wellness offerings which quickly become a part of everyday life. From morning workouts, open-air yoga and invigorating ice baths to nourishing Mediterranean dining and unhurried afternoons beside the beachfront pool, every experience encourages guests to slow down, reconnect, and move at a gentler pace. Long after leaving Ibiza, it wasn't the parties I remembered most, but those peaceful mornings overlooking the Mediterranean and the quiet, deliberate rituals that made every day feel that little bit lighter.
