The hospitable welcome begins as soon as you step foot inside Velana International Airport. Guests are personally met at arrivals, assisted with luggage, and quickly whisked away to a serene lounge prior to departure. A scenic 40-minute seaplane journey ensues, gliding past some of the most iconic atolls in the Maldives.
The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort: The Platinum Standard of Maldivian Luxury
Baldwin Ho discovers barefoot luxury on the private island of Vommuli in the Dhaalu Atoll.
To the uninitiated, it may seem like luxury resorts are a dime a dozen in the Maldives. How do you stand out in this crowded marketplace and offer a truly luxurious experience? The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort has paved the way for the last ten years with its striking architecture, exceptional service, and focus on discreet luxury.
From the moment your seaplane approaches the resort, you know you're minutes away from discovering a unique slice of heaven. Keep your eyes peeled for the signature Iridium Spa, which is famously shaped like a lobster when viewed from above.
You won't find the stereotypical thatched-roof bungalows here. Most of the buildings have been designed with a marine life theme by the talented team from the Singaporean firm WOW Architects. Their upscale sunset cocktail lounge, The Whale Bar, is shaped like the slow-moving whale shark that swims in the local waters. Elsewhere, the modern Japanese Kaiseki at T•Pan has an exterior that mimics a ghost crab's shell, whilst the overwater villas resemble graceful manta rays fanned across the water.
The Maldivian Welcome
After alighting the seaplane, guests are warmly greeted by a butler and the resort's management team. After Champagne is sipped, you soon find yourself arriving at your villa without any of the formal admin stops.
The butler will give you a leisurely tour of the island's facilities via his golf buggy. Once settled, the main mode of transportation for guests is either by bike or on foot. Crucially, your butler remains contactable via WhatsApp throughout the duration of your stay and is on hand to assist with restaurant reservations, excursion bookings, and floating breakfasts.
A Tranquil Sanctuary
The St. Regis offers unique, inviting residences rather than mere hotel rooms. There is generous spacing between the villas, allowing guests to enjoy the tranquil surroundings in all their glory. On the inside, expect clean, crips aesthetics and floor-to-ceiling windows flooded with Maldivian sunlight. Light oak panelling and creamy interiors create a cosy, intimate feel, while terraces (attached to overwater villas) boast private plunge pools, overwater hammocks and direct access to the turquoise lagoon.
There's just one dilemma; which villa is best? Guests can choose between an overwater villa or a beach villa, both featuring either a sunset or sunrise view. Whilst an overwater villa is considered the iconic Maldivian experience, the often overlooked beach villa experience delivers a lush, jungle aesthetic that's beautifully vibrant. What's more, families with younger children may prefer the assurance of a land-based villa.
While sunset villas are popular for their mesmerising, unobstructed views of the sun at golden hour, the decks at sunrise villas are significantly cooler during the afternoon.
Villas aside, the resort also features a handful of ultra-exclusive, sizeable estates which are ideal if you're travelling with families and friends. The John Jacob Astor Estate is recognised as the largest three-bedroom overwater villa in the Maldives, spanning 16,500 square feet. It accommodates up to 12 guests, with attached private spa suites, and includes a 92-square-metre private infinity pool, a whirlpool, two plunge pools, a private gym and a state-of-the-art home cinema room.
Michelin-Quality Dining Experiences
The resort features seven dining and lounge venues. Whether you're after immersive surroundings or exceptional plates, there's a spot to suit every mood. The only venue worth a precisely timed visit is The Whale Bar, which hosts a daily sunset Champagne sabering ritual at around 6 pm. It's a dramatic experience, complete with music and a skyline backdrop drenched in vibrant shades of pink, purple, and orange. As the name suggests, the bottle is spliced open with a sabre, and complimentary Champagne is offered to guests.
Their signature all-day dining restaurant is ALBA, which serves up a surprisingly expansive selection of Italian, Mediterranean, and international dishes. Dare to pair a tom yum talay soup with a linguine vongole and the staff won't bat an eyelid. What is remarkable is the level of authenticity achieved in each dish in spite of the menu's vast scope. All the right spices and herbs are used, with the latter coming directly from the resort's kitchen garden.
Asian food enthusiasts are extremely well catered for. Their South Asian restaurant, Cargo, delivers Indian delights in the verdant greenery of their jungle forest. Enjoy moreish options like their wagyu short rib pao and their aromatic tiger prawn biryani. Elsewhere, Orientale serves up an array of pan-Asian delights spanning Thai, Japanese and Chinese cuisines. Notably, they have some ultra-special offerings which do require a pre-order, such as Peking duck and Shabu Shabu hot pot.
The jewel in their culinary crown is T•Pan. Plenty of resorts offer teppanyaki experiences these days, but more often than not, they are gimmicky affairs involving egg throwing and fire displays. At T•Pan, the focus is firmly on the food. Every element of the multi-course Kaiseki experience is meticulously curated, beginning with a traditional hand-washing ritual using soothing rice milk. Pure culinary wizardry follows, highlighting sourced ingredients such as delicate Hokkaido scallops and melt-in-your-mouth Omi A5 wagyu. The pièce de résistance, nevertheless, is their cult-status dessert: the miso fondant. Here, the umami flavours perfectly enhance the rich, molten chocolate sweetness. This dish alone is worth the trip to the Maldives.
A Haven For Relaxation
"I'm having my spa treatment inside a lobster” isn't exactly something you hear everyday, but at the resort's Iridium Spa, it's an everyday occurrence. Complete with hypnotic views of the Indian Ocean, this totally transformative space has been built with ultimate relaxation in mind. The spa menu includes the Iridium Signature Touch, which combines Asian massage techniques with aromatic natural oils. For a bespoke touch, guests can choose the oil scent that best suits their mood.
For something unmissable, book in for a private hydrotherapy session at their expansive Blue Hole Pool. It is the largest overwater heated-seawater hydrotherapy pool in the Maldives, decked out with high-pressure whirlpool jets which help to improve blood circulation and ease muscle tension. What's more the saltwater is great at exfoliating the skin and regulating levels of oil.
While the Maldives has a reputation for being nothing but sand and sea, the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort ensures that guests have plenty to do by way of myriad sporting activities. Aside from scuba diving and snorkelling in their private house reef, they also offer other water activities like jet skiing, parasailing, hydrofoiling and kayaking.
For those craving something out of the ordinary, anti-gravity yoga, beach movie screenings, and sunset dolphin cruises are also available.
In short, the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort serves as the ultimate backdrop for an idyllic Maldivian getaway. It fuses unrivalled hospitality, discretion, outstanding food and drink, and sophisticated interiors that work in tandem with the natural surroundings. Paradise has never felt closer.
