In this edition of Women Who Launch, Menzies talks about making the jump from a career in the nightlife industry, how she continues to innovate while staying true to her brand ethos, and her favourite milestones from the past 15 years.
“I’ve always been fascinated by pieces that carry history and emotion - clothes that become more beautiful because of the life they’ve lived,” says Hayley Menzies, founder and creative director of her eponymous brand, who describes her mission as “creating the vintage of the future”.
This year marks the company’s 15th anniversary, a milestone for the British luxury label known for producing attention-grabbing pieces that blend the founder’s love of vintage fashion with a distinctly rebellious edge - think prints on prints, bold colours, and lots of fringe. “In a world of fast fashion, I want to create things that have permanence and personality,” she explains.
While prowling leopards and celestial bodies may have become Hayley Menzies signatures, it’s the integrity of the craftsmanship behind her garments that has given the brand a cult following over a decade later. I visit her flagship store in Duke of York Square and I’m immediately transported to a far-off land. Nature, animals, and enchanting destinations are all sources of inspiration for the free-spirited designer.
I throw on the popular Magic Leopard cardigan and almost instantly there’s a spring in my step. Partnering with artisans from different countries, Menzies favours natural fabrics and is a proud supporter of family-led small businesses. “Relationships are everything to me - many of the people we work with have been with the brand for years - I think it comes down to mutual respect, trust, and genuinely valuing craftsmanship,” she says. “I’m very hands-on and collaborative, and I love learning about traditional techniques and processes from the people making the pieces.”

How did your years in London’s rave and nightlife scene influence the ethos behind your brand?
It actually started earlier for me in the rave scenes in Bristol and Birmingham - there was such a strong drum and bass culture there - I used to customise all my clothes and costumes, and I’d always get a big shout-out from the MC. I loved that feeling of being picked out from a crowd. Fashion became this really powerful form of self-expression for me. It’s why I love creating pieces that make women feel seen, because when you feel seen, you’re heard.
How would you describe your brand in three words?
Luxurious, eclectic and soulful.
Any unforgettable milestones from the past 15 years?
Opening my flagship on Duke of York Square was huge for me. Seeing the brand grow from a Portobello Market stall into an international womenswear brand still feels surreal at times. Seeing my designs in Liberty and Harrods for the first time was also a real pinch-me moment. But honestly, one of the most special parts has been the community that’s grown around the brand over the years.
Could you describe the Hayley Menzies woman - who is she and where is she going?
She’s free-spirited, friendly, and emotionally expressive. She’s curious about the world and collects stories, memories, and pieces along the way. She’s glamorous, but never over-polished - there’s always a bit of undone ease to her. And where is she going? Hopefully somewhere fabulous with a slightly overpacked suitcase.
Could you tell me more about the Caravana Couture collection?
Caravana Couture is rooted in this idea of the modern nomad: a woman collecting treasures and inspiration from different cultures, places, and moments. The collection blends shaggy knits, tapestry-inspired prints, studded denim and silk layering pieces with a real sense of texture and wanderlust. There’s a romanticism to it, but also a toughness. It’s very much about freedom, individuality, and storytelling through clothes.
What would be your favourite travel destination and why?
I find it really hard to choose just one because travel inspires so much of what I do. I love places that feel expansive, soulful, and connected to nature, like India, Costa Rica, or Thailand. I always come back feeling creatively recharged.
What advice would you give to other women looking to launch their own businesses?
Start before you feel ready. Honestly, if I’d waited until I knew exactly what I was doing, I’d never have started. Also, surround yourself with people who deeply care and believe in your vision. That’s everything. Business can be incredibly challenging, so having the right people around you really matters.
Any big plans for the brand that you’re especially excited about?
We’re opening a new store on the King’s Road, which is incredibly exciting, and I’m currently working on Spring/Summer 2027. I’m also excited about continuing to evolve the brand beyond fashion, and building more of a lifestyle world around it.
