New player CoreVitals is raising the bar when it comes to advanced blood testing. The Sybarite sat down with the platform’s Head of Growth to find out more about the product and its place in the market.

Demand for more accessible and high-quality data-driven healthcare is fueling the rapid growth of the healthtech market. In particular, people are increasingly turning to in-depth blood testing to gain a broader overview of their functional health and long-term wellbeing. Proactive health platform, CoreVitals, is raising the advanced blood testing bar with its comprehensive panel that looks at over 100 key biomarkers across all body systems. In this exclusive Q&A with The Sybarite, Head of Growth, Millie O’Brien, explains how the product works and what makes it stand out from the crowd.

Can you tell us more about the story behind CoreVitals and how it came into existence?

We operate in a stable of healthtech brands which includes GetScanned, Elevate, and CoreVitals. The most recent addition, CoreVitals, was launched around two months ago. It  was co-founded by Doctor Nitin Shori — who has been a GP for the past 20 years and is one of the founding fathers of the UK’s telehealth revolution — and Adil Mohammed, who has founded and exited multiple businesses across e-commerce and tech.

In collaborating together, they realised that there is a massive gap between functional blood testing and private blood testing as a commoditised product that you can buy online. You can walk into any pharmacy and get a blood test, but the way that experience is curated around optimising your health is really lacking in the UK context. A lot of the blood testing has a tight clinical range and is very binary. But, with functional health, you are thinking of the body as a whole and the way that your systems interact.

Please can you talk us through the process?

Members can sign up online. They will receive one of our kits which are sealed off and sterilised. We don’t do any at-home blood tests. All bloods are drawn by trained phlebotomists at our partner pharmacies. There is this perception that it is a much better experience for members, because they don't have to touch their blood and they don't have to think about whether they are doing it in the correct way. The pharmacy network is extensive and availability for appointments is really good.

How long does it take for members to receive their results?

We test for a very broad number of biomarkers, so it is not a case of completing the test and receiving the results the next day. We say that members can expect results between seven and eight days after they have had the test and posted off their bloods.

How accurate are the results?

We partner with the most trusted private lab in the UK, so the quality of testing is very high and there is also a high sensitivity for any issues with the sample.

What is the main benefit of regular testing?

We do two panels. At the beginning of the year we do a really comprehensive panel, and then we do a secondary panel after six months, which includes about a third of the markers. There is a value in looking at a point-in-time analysis, and with anything, the trend is the most valuable thing.

Even though you might be sitting within an optimal range for a number of years, you might still be trending upwards, and so you might be able to anticipate that you're about to tip over into a range that you don't want to be in. Not only can the member see that trend via the app, they can also see what they can do to optimise that marker.

What exactly is a biomarker?

It is a categorisation of something that is in your blood which we can use to infer insights about your body. Really common biomarkers include Glucose, which impacts a number of things, and Vitamin D; a deficiency of which might mean you haven’t had enough sunlight.

Can these biomarkers provide indication of certain conditions?

CoreVitals is not a diagnostic service and it is not a primary care provider. Even though doctors review results, if they see a clear presence of a certain condition, they are not in a position to diagnose, nor are they in a position to prescribe any drugs.

We will have inferences at the biomarker level, with elevations possibly indicating certain conditions. In very extreme cases, if there is something concerning, doctors will refer you to A&E, but in most cases, if there is something that needs to be explored more, members will be referred back to their own GP.

Can you tell us more about the app?

The app is something we built ourselves based on feedback from members. One of the core proponents of the app is being able to see each biomarker and observe its trend line. For each biomarker, there is also some context about why we are testing for it, the body system it is related to, and indicators of high and low ranges.

Associated with each biomarker, we also have recommendations of foods to eat and foods to avoid, as well as lifestyle recommendations. What’s more, the doctor and nutritionist that are assigned to you will work together to provide you with personalised recommendations. Within the app, there is also the standard functionality of being able to book all of your appointments, and also chat with your doctor and nutritionist.

What makes CoreVitals stand out from the crowd?

Our unique position in the market is down to the actual product, what that represents and how that’s been designed, as well as the product’s service vertical. Regarding the physical product, the panel is far more extensive than that of peers. Most peers in the UK do modular testing that looks at very specific markers such as heart markers. While these are insightful, it’s nice to have a broader picture.

Not only do we offer the breadth, the panel itself has been designed by a number of GPs who approach functional medicine doctors and also longevity specialists to look at markers that could provide a really comprehensive overview. One of these markers is high-sensitive CRP (hs-CRP). It is a common inflammation marker, and is something that a lot of functional medicine and longevity doctors look at because inflammation is the number one sign of how long you’re going to live.

Is CoreVitals’ blood test suitable for everyone?

It is suitable for everyone, but we don’t test anyone below the age of 18. We have different panels for men and women. For example, we have PSA testing (prostate screening) for men, and a number of female hormone panels that are included for women. The other really interesting thing is being able to observe body change around hormonal events.

A lot of our customer experience is being built to provide insights for postmenopausal women, women that are on hormonal contraceptives and women that are potentially looking at their bloods at different points in their cycle. The classic example is that if you are on hormonal contraception, then all of your female hormone markers will likely score low. This is just a product of the synthetic hormone, it is not a product of the way that your body is functioning.

What support do your nutritionists offer?

Our nutritionist has been really involved in building the clinical product. A large part of their role is actually supporting us with the content that goes into our app and social platforms, as well as the library of information we have available externally. For members, after your results have been published and reviewed by a doctor, you will be invited to arrange a 1:1, 15-minute consultation with the nutritionist who will then make recommendations for foods to eat, foods to avoid, and also suggest any supplements that might be beneficial.
