For those mapping out an escape through Asia, one destination that continues to fly just under the radar is Penang - Malaysia’s storied island jewel where culture, cuisine, and coastal beauty converge.
Known fondly as the Pearl of the Orient, Penang’s capital city, George Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a living museum of colonial architecture, vibrant street art, and the scent of spices drifting from hawker stalls. But beyond the city’s charm lies a tropical retreat that captures Penang’s rhythm of easy sophistication: Shangri-La Rasa Sayang. Discover The Sybarite's review below...
Set along Batu Ferringhi Beach, just a 45-minute drive from Penang International Airport, this beachfront sanctuary blends heritage elegance with contemporary resort living. During our two-night stay, we checked into the Junior Suite in the exclusive Rasa Wing, a tranquil enclave designed for those seeking privacy and personalised indulgence.
Guests of this wing enjoy privileges that transform the stay into an experience of quiet luxury: afternoon tea at the Rasa Lounge, evening cocktails and canapés as the sun dips below the horizon, breakfast in two distinct venues, and access to the serene Rasa Wing Pool, a space reserved for adults.
Although the resort is expansive, with more than 300 rooms nestled amid tropical gardens, the Rasa Wing’s intimacy made our stay feel bespoke. While some design details reflect an older era, there’s an undeniable charm in its character. Think polished timber floors, open terraces, and uninterrupted sea views that breathe a sense of nostalgia. From our balcony, we enjoyed the unique indulgence of an outdoor stone tub, perfect for unwinding after a day spent under the sun.
The resort’s greatest gift, however, is its balance between family-friendly fun and soulful rest. Our children spent carefree hours between the beach and pool, while we escaped to the beachfront spa for a full-body massage, serenaded by the sound of the waves. Every element of the resort - from its lush canopy of rain trees to its refined service - encourages you to slow down, breathe, and reconnect.
Mornings began at the Spice Market Café, the heart of the hotel’s dining scene. Its breakfast buffet is a celebration of flavour, offering both international favourites and local Peranakan classics. We highly recommend trying the kopi tiam coffee and kaya toast - a simple yet iconic Malaysian pairing that reflects Penang’s culinary heritage.
In all, our time at Shangri-La Rasa Sayang was the perfect interlude. It felt like a tropical pause between the energy of George Town and the ease of the sea. In short, it's a resort that understands balance: where luxury is unpretentious, service is intuitive, and nature sets the pace. For those visiting Penang in search of both culture and calm, this is where the island reveals its most elegant side.
This is the kind of under-the-radar family resort you almost want to keep to yourself - the sort that quietly ticks every box and then goes a little further, without the crowds or the noise. What we love most about POST Family Resort is that it still feels like a discovery.
