True to their motto “See what others don’t,” Swan Hellenic’s cruise calendar is action-packed and laced with adventure.
A prime example is their Skeleton Coast cruise from Cape Town, South Africa to Luanda, Angola. Its infamous coastline is renowned for its past association with thousands of shipwrecks, largely due to the dense fog that often shrouds the waters. Only a handful of specialised expedition cruise ships set sail along this coastline, such as the SH Diana, which has a capacity of 192 guests.
When it comes to the key differences between an expedition cruise and a traditional cruise, it’s worth noting that expedition ships are much smaller and more nimble, meaning they’re able to access narrow waterways and remote regions. As for their itineraries, there is a significant degree of flexibility given that they’re largely dictated by weather and wildlife. Beyond this, expedition cruises are typically much more adventurous with landings on zodiac boats and long hikes for wildlife spotting often on the agenda. With nature taking centre stage, extensive entertainment and nightlife offerings are few and far between on expedition cruise ships.
The Expedition Guides
Irrespective of the final guest count, Swan Hellenic always has at least 12 knowledgeable expedition guides, expert speakers, and lecturers on board. For the 2026 edition of this cruise, this included award-winning British travel writer and photographer, Sarah Marshall, who has over 20 years of experience covering African wildlife, conservation, and remote adventures.
Also on board was leading ornithologist, Javier Cotin. He has a PhD from the University of Barcelona and specialises in studying seabird habitats and the impact of human activity on bird populations. Aside from being incredibly knowledgeable, the guides on board are very personable and approachable. Not only do they help with leading the onshore tours and hosting talks onboard, but they’re also on hand to help organise the zodiacs, and can be approached over dinner for insightful conversations.
Excursions in South Africa
Starting on a literal high, the cruise excursion kicks off at the top of Table Mountain, which is reached via a scenic cable car ride. Apart from having a stupendous viewing point for Cape Town, the tour guide will also point out the diverse flora and fauna on display, including the species at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden which is widely regarded as one of the greatest botanical gardens in the world. Marvel at the stunning Table Mountain backdrop, and keep your eyes peeled for the giant, otherworldly, artichoke-like blooms of the Protea - the national flower of South Africa.
The first stop at Saldanha Bay shows how Swan Hellenic fuses nature and culture with consummate ease. Guests are taken to !Khwa ttu - The "Embassy" of South Africa’s oldest inhabitants, The San. Here, learn the click consonants in the San language, barbecue venison in the bushes, and practice shooting arrows. This form of archery was a courtship technique amongst the San people, whereby the man would gently shoot the woman he intended to marry in the upper thigh. If the woman pulled the arrow out and kept it, she accepted his proposal.
Excursions in Namibia
As hinted by its name, The Skeleton Coast in Namibia is awash with ghost towns. A 15-minute drive from Lüderitz is Kolmanskop - a famous abandoned German diamond-mining settlement. It was once a thriving community until the diamond reserves dwindled in the area. Nowadays, you can walk through eerie, decaying sand-filled mansions steeped in history.
A trip to Walvis Bay is not complete without visiting the "Moon Landscape". A short drive out into the surrounding desert reveals the dramatic, heavily eroded desert valley, which resembles the lunar surface and has been used to shoot films like Mad Max. For the past few years, Swan Hellenic has arranged a "Dinner Under the Stars" experience, where guests enjoy a superbly well-catered dinner complete with dazzling fire spinners and a live marimba band.
Excursions in Angola
Angola’s ghost town at Ilha Baia dos Tigres is arguably even more captivating. It is so remote and separated from the mainland that Swan Hellenic was the first expedition ship to visit the island last year.
There was previously a vibrant fishing town on the island until a violent storm in 1962 severed its connection to the mainland, making it untenable. Now the abandoned ruins of São Martinho dos Tigres include an atmospheric cathedral and even a former airstrip, all covered by an endless sea of shifting sand.
The penultimate stop is Namibe. Now known as Moçâmedes, the port of Namibe was settled by the Portuguese in the 19th century. It was one of the earliest slave-trading towns in the region and is also known as the gateway to the arid Namib Desert. A tour can also be arranged to visit Lago do Arco do Carvalhao which is a desert oasis in the true sense of the word. Expect to come across awe-inspiring rock formations, all with significant amounts of salt deposits, in addition to two spectacular sandstone arches which can be reached via a hike.
The Cruise Ship Experience
Built in 2023, this is Swan Hellenic's newest expedition ship. With a 192-passenger capacity, guests enjoy small-ship exclusivity alongside luxury amenities typical of larger vessels, including a heated outdoor pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, fitness centre, spa, and boutique shop.
The cabins are noticeably more spacious when compared with similar cruise ships, especially when it comes to the bathrooms, which are decked out with rainfall showers and luxury toiletries. On the storage front, there is ample space within the cabin, with hiking bags and sustainable water bottles are provided for excursions.
The minibar, an array of snacks, a welcome bottle of Champagne, Illy espresso pods and Kusmi tea are included with your cruise booking. Elsewhere, the crackling electric "fireplace" in the centre of the room has often been quoted as the most popular cabin feature.
Global Gastronomy
Chef Amit is the widely acclaimed executive chef on board the SH Diana. His team's knowledge of global cuisine trends is unrivalled. From Korean seafood gratin to Austrian Sacher torte, the menus are taken seriously here. While lunches tend to be a buffet offering, most dinners are à la carte with complimentary wine pairings. Local products are sourced wherever possible, and the team can also accommodate dietary needs with ease and whip up special dishes as required.
Activities on Board
The educational, expert-led presentations on local culture and wildlife were a real highlight. Javier conducted a fascinating presentation on African penguins and ongoing conservation efforts, while Sarah conducted a talk on cultural sensitivities when visiting countries along the Skeleton Coast. Beyond this, they also have live music every evening, in addition to karaoke nights and quiz evenings.

Luxury travel, in its most evolved form, is no longer defined by extravaganza and opulence. It is shaped by places and experiences that offer a greater sense of belonging. It's access to private spaces and quiet moments that are hard to come by.
Some places become a memory after one visit, while others remain etched in your mind like a sunset slowly dipping into the horizon. Italy's Lake Como is firmly placed in the latter category.
