Located in the heart of Merano, Villa Eden is a peaceful sanctuary dedicated to wellness and transformative treatments. Below, read Sara Darling's honest take on the Alpine enclave.
Come to Villa Eden for wellness and leave with a spring in your step - quite literally, in my case, after discovering a miraculous posture adjustment, following a Divine Healing session with consultant, Stefan.
As discerning travellers swap traditional spa breaks for immersive longevity escapes, South Tyrol is emerging as Europe’s most exclusive wellness destination. This elegant Alpine enclave is a unique destination where Austrian precision meets Italian indulgence and has become the retreat of choice for those seeking preventative medicine, biohacking and holistic restoration in extraordinary surroundings. Easily accessible from London on the direct Sky Alps airline, you can be immersed in wellness within a few hours.
An Intimate Retreat
Merano provides the perfect backdrop for this new era of elevated wellbeing. Nestled in a valley near the Austrian border, the town has long been associated with restorative spa culture. Once favoured by European aristocracy and wellness pioneers, it is now enjoying a renaissance among longevity-focused travellers drawn by the mountain air, thermal heritage and discreet luxury.
Villa Eden sits within a peaceful residential area just fifteen minutes from the centre, surrounded by manicured gardens, vineyards and apple orchards beneath the dramatic Dolomite peaks. Unlike some of the region’s grander properties, its intimate scale is precisely what gives it such appeal. There’s no overcrowding or over-programming here. More often than not, I found myself entirely alone in the steam room or floating peacefully in the indoor pool - an increasingly rare luxury in modern wellness resorts.
Homely yet undeniably luxurious, Villa Eden transforms guests without fanfare. There’s no intimidating jargon or clinical coldness. Instead, this 29-suite retreat combines cutting-edge longevity medicine with the warmth and familiarity of a privately owned home - courtesy of founder, Angelika Schmid.
Impressive Facilities
From early morning power walks through South Tyrol’s postcard-perfect countryside with age-defying personal trainer Mirco La Mendola (who took fitness to another level) to languorous afternoons drifting between the infrared sauna, heated indoor pool, outdoor hot tub and sun loungers, I could happily have spent my stay enjoying the beautifully understated facilities alone.
Even for guests not following a medical programme, there’s an impressive weekly schedule of classes and excursions including Fusion Yoga, Water Gymnastics, Hormonal Balance sessions and stretching classes. One particular highlight was a visit to the family’s nearby winery, Castel Rametz, which has been producing fine wine for generations and was a delightful stop for a private tasting.
Personalised Programmes
I stayed in the Pavarotti Suite on the ground floor, where the legendary tenor himself once slept, and this alone deserves a mention for its thoughtful luxe appeal - where everything was considered - from the hair products to the electric scales and coffee machine.
Throughout the property there’s a distinct sense of Italian decadence softened by and even during mornings filled with back-to-back treatments, I was discreetly guided from therapist to therapist, quietly passing fellow guests drifting through the corridors in immaculate white robes.
My three-night stay was a taster of Villa Eden’s acclaimed Longevity Programme - one of the key reasons wellness insiders are increasingly flocking to South Tyrol. Unlike trend-led spa resorts, the focus here is deeply personalised and science-backed, attracting a discerning clientele seeking tangible results rather than fleeting indulgence.
The programme takes place within Villa Eden’s softly lit basement clinic, a fascinating rabbit warren housing everything from cryotherapy chambers and oxygen therapy to advanced diagnostics and anti-inflammatory treatments. Yet despite the high-tech offering, the atmosphere feels warm rather than clinical. Guests linger in reception wearing their slippers, sipping green tea between appointments, adding to the sense of ease and familiarity.
The entire property feels more like an elegant private residence than a hotel, and that’s entirely intentional. Owner Angelika has cultivated an atmosphere where guests feel genuinely cared for rather than processed through a wellness conveyor belt. Frequently present around the property, her instinctive understanding of hospitality is mirrored perfectly by her team, all of whom somehow remember guests’ names, preferences and routines from day one.
The Longevity Centre
At the heart of the experience is the Longevity Centre, overseen by Dr Emanuele De Nobili, a specialist in anti-ageing medicine and nutrition. The breadth of treatments available is genuinely impressive for a boutique property. Guests can undergo DNA testing, ozone therapy, personalised diagnostics and aesthetic procedures. Even those not enrolled in a specialist programme receive a complimentary facial scan and consultation with Dr De Nobili to discuss health concerns and tailored recommendations.
One of the most fascinating therapies I experienced was Cellgym®, a hypoxic cellular training treatment that mimics the effects of high-altitude conditioning. Designed to stimulate cellular energy and improve oxygen efficiency, it exposes the body to carefully controlled low-oxygen intervals that encourage regeneration and resilience. While the concept sounds intensely scientific, the experience itself was surprisingly relaxing: reclining comfortably while my body quietly worked to recharge itself at a cellular level, accompanied only by the occasional gentle reminder not to fall asleep.
Equally impressive was Villa Eden’s IV Drip Lounge, offering bespoke intravenous infusions tailored to individual wellness goals. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, formulas are customised in consultation with the medical team to support immunity, energy, recovery and anti-ageing - perfectly encapsulating the new era of luxury wellness: preventative, data-led and highly personalised.
Alongside the diagnostics and technology, my stay also focused on more tactile, restorative therapies. The signature Body Cast Treatment was unlike anything I had experienced before. This two-hour ritual began with a soothing massage and mineral-rich algae application before the therapist carefully wrapped the lower part of my body in a sculpting plaster cast designed to stimulate circulation, detoxification and lymphatic drainage.
Initially, I worried the treatment might feel claustrophobic, but only my legs and stomach were wrapped, and I enjoyed a face massage as the cast hardened and alternating sensations of warmth and coolness swept across my skin. Designed to increase internal temperature and blood supply, it helps combat localised fat deposits and cellulite, because heat accentuates the fat-dissolving principle - and the results post treatment showed that my thighs had definitely improved in texture.
The beauty treatments deserve particular praise. Villa Eden Cosmetics has created an elegant range of face and body rituals using regenerative techniques and nutrient-rich ingredients designed to nourish the skin deeply. My facial incorporated lipid-replenishing formulas to restore hydration and elasticity, leaving my complexion luminous for days afterwards. Even guests not booking treatments are offered a complimentary skin analysis on arrival, and the bathroom products, designed by the Resort are available to buy.
Nourishing Meals
Dining, too, forms part of the therapeutic experience. Villa Eden’s award-winning Healthy Wellness Cuisine balances mindful nutrition with indulgence beautifully. Alongside gourmet and detox menus, there’s also an exceptional seasonal tasting menu that showcases the creativity of the kitchen through refined, flavour-led dishes that feel both nourishing and luxurious.
What Villa Eden does so brilliantly is remove the severity often associated with medical wellness. Rather than feeling like a clinic disguised as a hotel, it feels like an elegant sanctuary where science, beauty and hospitality coexist effortlessly.
In a region now synonymous with elevated wellbeing, Villa Eden may not be South Tyrol’s largest retreat, nor its flashiest - but that is precisely its charm. Intimate, discreet and highly personalised, it’s the kind of place where staff remember your favourite herbal tea and every dietary preference by the second day of your stay - so it's little wonder guests return year after year.
