We're kickstarting this travel series in Copenhagen, a culinary capital and city of hygge! Whilst you're there, stay in one of the most luxurious hotels in Scandinavia.

With only 48 hours to spare in Denmark's capital, I wanted to make the most of my time there - whilst (rather juxtaposingly) have a relaxing, weekend city break away from the hustle & bustle of London. One would think this to be a seemingly impossible mission, yet, I had to look no further than Nimb Hotel: a through-the-looking-glass castle of escapist bliss.

After arriving late on a Friday evening flight, we were welcomed with a friendly smile by the charming Peter, eager to assist us in whatever way he could throughout our stay. The service and attention to detail was impeccable, and a reflection of the Danish spirit – quintessentially hygge with a soupçon of romantic flair.

Nimb Hotel is Scandi luxury, personified. With only 38 guest rooms, the castle is a fresh breath of tranquility, stood gallantly behind the magnificent Tivoli Gardens (the third-oldest operating amusement park in the world, which, Nimb guests also get free access too), and has been preserved and updated with an idyllic blend of grandiose Moorish architecture and sleek, boutique Scandi finishes. The fanciful Nimb Hotel also hosts a variety of other arts and culture on its grounds, garden parties, wine tastings, and opera and jazz concerts on the roof.

Where to stay

If I haven't already sold you on why you should stay at Nimb Hotel this Valentine's Day, please allow me to set the scene. Picture neo-Moorish romantic architecture: spires, domes, latticework and beautiful, curved windows. But not only is the exterior beautifully sculpted; the interior of Nimb is what truly sets it apart from other hotels in the city.

With wonderfully thought-out foundations, gorgeous stained wooden flooring, and an array of danish products offered (we're talking about you Bang & Olufsen), it’s the ultimate hotel for unwinding. When walking into our room, we were pleasantly surprised by the heart-shaped rose petals scattered across the king-size bed, and balcony that overlooked the festively decorated Tivoli Gardens (not to mention the delightful bottle of bubbly that we eagerly gulped down after a long evening of travel).

As any self-respecting foodie would know, the Copenhagen culinary scene is ruthless (the recent movie The Menu owes it's truths within the Scandi food scene). Chefs constantly attempt to one-up their rivals – so trends often come and go very quickly. But Nimb succeeds and even pushes their own competitive agenda. With a varied collection of menus, Nimb also arguably houses one of the best bars in Copenhagen, accompanied with a snug fire for cosy winter nights. But there's also a smørrebrød restaurant called Fru Nimb, a French brasserie, a veggie menu at Gemyse, and a delectable pastry store you must try called Cakenhagen.

Where to relax

And yet, if that still isn't enough to satisfy your palette, the wellness centre, which opened in 2018, offers the most romantic couples massage you could ask for. Spa therapists Bibi and Chanet really know their stuff when it comes to transporting your mind & body a thousand miles away; envision a world of tranquility (where overflowing email inboxes and expired deadlines for tax returns don't exist).

We began our session in the bone-warming hammam, sweating off the stress of everyday life, before being guided - with a glass of champagne in hand - to a calming oasis for our Tibetan foot sound bath. A sensual, holistic experience for the body and soul, the Lomi Lomi flow massage ensures that you melt away on the couch. Bibi and Chanet expertly tailored the treatment to our needs, with gentle vibrations from the singing bowls and the choice to pick between three aromatic essential oils: balance, strength & calm. We then proceeded into the next room for our full body massage, a deeply relaxing session that released the physical tensions and left me feeling, dare I say it, totally zen.

Sights to see

Copenhagen is filled with charm, and a breath of fresh air from your typical city break. Sleek, sexy and happy, Denmark’s capital has an air of quiet contentment. Make sure to visit the famous Nyhavn Harbour for those aesthetic insta-worthy pics, Rosenborg Castle for a fairy-tale fantasy, and, if you're a fan of Ariel & Sebastian the Crab, The Little Mermaid statue that pays homage to the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.

Bon Voyage!
