Perhaps you’ve seen images of this before - saved it on Pinterest or come across it on social media - and wondered where such a place could possibly exist. The answer is, this almost dreamlike property is located in Yangshuo, Guilin, often referred to as China’s 'Paradise on Earth.'

Just a short journey from Shanghai, approximately a two-hour flight followed by a scenic drive from Guilin Liangjiang Airport, the shift in pace is immediate. The energy softens, the surroundings open up, and you find yourself stepping into something that feels entirely removed from the city.

Housed within a former sugar mill, Yangshuo Sugar House is otherworldly from the moment you arrive. The calm of the old mills perched alongside manmade lakes, the temperate air, the towering karst peaks... it closely resembles a dreamscape.

This is a rare five-star property that has resisted the temptation to tear everything down and start afresh. Instead, it has let its heritage dictate its design, and the result is a juxtaposition of past and present that feels both magical and quietly radical in the world of modern hospitality.

Thoughtfully-Designed Rooms

The resort's 113 rooms and suites are thoughtfully kitted out with contemporary comforts, designed to ensure guests return each evening feeling grounded and at ease. For families, the Sugar House Family Retreat Twin is particularly well considered with its two generous twin beds, dining table, fully stocked minibar, and ensuite bathroom featuring double sinks.

The room comfortably accommodates two adults and two children, and comes with a genuinely impressive set of complimentary inclusions: a photography session, an art tour, and bunny feeding for little ones, among a wider offering of cultural and wellness experiences to organise throughout your stay.

Curated Experiences

When it comes to experiences, there is no shortage of things to do. Morning yoga and Tai Chi sessions set a gentle tone for the day, while the resort's own cliff face offers rock climbing at varying levels of difficulty - a genuine thrill for older children and adventurous adults alike. One particularly unmissable experience, however, is bamboo rafting along the Li River, which flows directly below the property. It is quintessentially Guilin, and all the more special for being so effortlessly accessible.

Elsewhere the complimentary photography session deserves a special mention. Book your slot at the concierge, choose up to five images, and leave with professional photographs set against some of the most extraordinary scenery imaginable. It's these small touches that elevate the overall experience.

Elevated Dining

Dining at Yangshuo Sugar House is a discovery in itself. While breakfast covers international options, we'd strongly encourage leaning into the local menu given that the region boasts a rich culinary identity. Seasonal farm-to-table ingredients are championed alongside vibrant flavours. The beer-battered fish, one of Guilin's most beloved dishes, is executed exceptionally well here and should not be skipped. While the resort currently houses just one restaurant, a fine-dining concept is in the pipeline.

After dinner, the 1969 Bar provides the perfect backdrop for a sophisticated nightcap with its original industrial features and in-house rum distillery. Sugar and rum-themed cocktails are the house speciality, though the bar will happily create something personalised if you're after something more bespoke. With the pool and river visible from the outdoor terrace, it truly is a magical spot to end an evening - beautifully atmospheric and unhurried.

Facilities

The Riverside Swimming Pool is, without question, the resort's showpiece. Framed by the preserved iron truss of the original mill and backdropped by the Li River, it is one of those spaces that looks just as impressive in person as it does in photos. Elsewhere, the AURUA Spa is also worth exploring. Designed as a tribute to the region's famous karst caves, the subterranean space is a quiet, immersive sanctuary home to a full range of restorative treatments.

Final Verdict

Yangshuo Sugar House is one of those rare properties that genuinely earns the word extraordinary. Not because of its price point or its amenities checklist, but because of how it makes you feel - unhurried, grounded, and quietly astonished by the fact that a place like this exists. Set against one of the most dramatic landscapes on earth, in a building with a story unlike almost any other, it doesn't just deliver a great hotel stay, it delivers something closer to a shift in perspective.
