Family-owned boutique hospitality group ADLER Spa Resorts are renowned for their five-star properties, unwavering commitment to luxury, and exceptional hospitality, a reputation they have maintained since their inception in 1820.
Almost exclusively scattered around the European Alps until 2022, ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA is now the hotel group’s sixth property. Blended almost inconspicuously into Sicily’s lush rolling hills, the resort is a Mecca for health and wellness travellers. Naturally, Olivia Cox checked in for a much-needed wellness retreat to put it through its paces.
The Location
ADLER SICILIA is situated in the tranquil Torre Salsa nature reserve — on the island’s southwestern coast near Siculiana, approximately a two-hour drive from Palermo and Catania airports. The resort has taken eco-tourism to an architectural level: think construction from sustainable materials like locally-sourced cedar wood and natural unbaked Sicilian clay. The chic hideaway is specifically designed to be architecturally low-profile, low-impact, and able to coexist harmoniously with the locals — including rare Caretta turtles.
The Rooms
ADLER SICILIA offers just one class of room: sprawling open-plan suites filled with natural light, merely serving to make these generous spaces feel even bigger. Note: families can book a family suite which consists of the standard suite, plus an adjoining smaller room. Beds are predictably huge, decked in crisp white sheets, and night lighting is soft and low, to promote a restful night’s sleep. Each suite has its own patio with outdoor seating: a table, chairs, and large round pouffe, big enough for two people to curl up on. The neutral, modern aesthetic of the resort is echoed throughout the suites, minimalist with an occasional sporadic flair. Muted hues are punctuated by colourful accents: fruit bowls spilling over with Sicilian oranges and sofa cushions in an exquisite deep orange velvet.
Dining
Breakfast and dinner (included in the half-board rate) are taken at the main Sea View restaurant, Lunch is an al fresco affair at Osteria. The quiet, views, and seemingly limitless plates collaborate to create a sense of time standing still. With sustainability at the heart of all ADLER properties, the team of chefs have perfected zero-mile indulgence, showcasing highlights of Sicilian cuisine using fruits, vegetables and herbs from the resort’s own garden. Naturally, fresh Mediterranean seafood is bountiful. Meals follow a traditional Italian format: starters and salads are self-served at the buffet, with guests free to negotiate exactly how many courses they’d like to follow: typically, an option from the ‘Primi’ pasta menu, followed by ‘Secondi’ meat or fish dishes, finishing with a dessert.
Gym & Spa
Paying homage to ADLER SICILIA’s principles of health and wellness, the resort has an exceptional gym boasting the latest Technogym machines. Guests can partake in a daily schedule of fitness classes taking place; sunrise yoga is particularly popular, with private sessions available on request. The panoramic view of the al fresco pool and undulating countryside are the ultimate motivator. For those looking to get outside and explore, guests also have access to electric bikes and daily guided hikes to explore the Torre Salsa Natural Reserve. By evening, guests decked in their beige robes make their way across the hilltop to the spa. With views from every angle, both the panoramic sauna and the thalassotherapy infinity pool enjoy spectacular sunsets. There is something marvellously peaceful about the staccato of flip flops, coupled with the chirping of crickets and occasional birds as the sun sets and guests choose their view point.
The Pool
Follow the snaking paths from the suites to find the main saltwater pool, which stretches from inside the spa into two infinity pools, one of which is heated. Loungers are strategically placed, allowing uninterrupted view of the glorious Sicilian landscape and the sparkling Mediterranean sea in the distance. Complimenting this is the 25-metre sports pool on the gym’s sun terrace, designed for a more active dip.
If you can pull yourself away from the hotel amenities, guests can get transported to the nearby beach by golf buggy, or enjoy a leisurely 10-minute stroll. Despite a smattering of day beds, kayaks and paddleboards, the beach feels like a private enclave hugged as far as the eye can see by undulating dunes.
Suites start from €270 to €533 per person for Half Board in a Junior Suite. For more information visit adler-resorts.com.
