POST Family Resort: A Four-Star Family Neverland in the Austrian Alps

This is the kind of under-the-radar family resort you almost want to keep to yourself - the sort that quietly ticks every box and then goes a little further, without the crowds or the noise. What we love most about POST Family Resort is that it still feels like a discovery.
POST Family Resort is a four-star family neverland we could happily return to again and again. What many don’t realise is that the property carries over 400 years of history. Once a postal station — hence the name POST — the building changed hands in 1955 before eventually finding its true identity in 1985 as a small, family-run hotel with just 25 rooms. Today, after extensive renovations, POST has evolved beautifully for modern families who value comfort, thoughtfulness and quality, without losing its soul.
Every corner of the resort feels intentional. The details are subtle but meaningful, from in-room baby amenities to clever little touches like integrated children’s headphones playing music and stories, to spacious room layouts that give both parents and children room to breathe. It’s the kind of place where family time feels natural, not staged.
Set in the town of Unken in the province of Salzburg, the resort is easy to reach from multiple directions. We drove from Germany, arriving from Salzburg in just three hours. Guests can just as easily come via Munich or Vienna, or fly directly into Salzburg Airport. We arrived early in the evening and felt an immediate sense of ease - perhaps it was the warm festive atmosphere, the effortless check-in, or the hotel’s resident cat greeting us at reception. Our children were welcomed with small stuffed animals — the hotel’s mascots — a simple gesture that instantly made them feel at home.
As a four-star property, there are a few practical compromises (we wheeled our own luggage to the room) but none of this detracted from the experience. If anything, it reinforced the feeling that POST prioritises substance over ceremony.
The Suites
We stayed for three nights in the Sonnenblick Suite, a generous 50 sqm two-bedroom suite ideal for families of two to four. Clean, modern and quietly refined, it felt more like a thoughtfully designed apartment than a hotel room. Oak-wood floors, a balcony overlooking the snowy landscape, a large bathtub alongside a double sink, separate shower and toilet, and a dedicated children’s bedroom made it feel genuinely liveable.
The attention to detail was exceptional. Children had their own robes and slippers laid out on their beds, while adults were given plush robes and large felt bags to use around the resort. Toiletries felt luxurious, a child-friendly toilet seat was already installed, and POST became the first family resort we’ve stayed at to offer children’s headsets for listening to stories and music. Room categories range widely, making it easy to tailor your stay to your family’s needs.
The Culinary Experience
Our first evening was spent unwinding in the suite before dinner at the resort’s restaurant, Gusto. POST operates on a full-board basis, meaning breakfast, lunch, dinner and afternoon tea are all included. What stood out most was the freedom - guests can wander into the restaurant at any point for a drink or snack, no questions asked. It’s refreshingly judgement-free and makes family travel feel genuinely relaxed.
Breakfast runs from 7:30 to 10:30 am and is both wholesome and generous. Guests can expect fresh juices, smoothies, excellent coffee, a wide selection of cereals, seeds, nuts, and traditional Austrian breads. Eggs are cooked to order, and there’s a dedicated baby food corner stocked with HIPP products and formula. Lunch and dinner combine buffet-style starters with à la carte mains, and the service is flexible and warm. The food easily exceeded expectations for a four-star resort, both in flavour and presentation.
The Activities
When it comes to activities, POST truly shines. Winter stays come with an abundance of snow-based fun: indoor and outdoor pools, an impressive 80-metre indoor tube slide, and plenty of space for children to roam. Our favourite experience, however, was horse riding as a family. Each day we spent around 45 minutes riding through the indoor and outdoor arenas, surrounded by snow-covered mountain views. Lessons cater to different ages and abilities, and arrangements can be made directly at the stables.
What sets POST apart from other family resorts is the freedom it gives its guests. Children can wander into the petting zoo whenever they wish, thanks to thoughtfully installed ladders and easy access points. Goats, rabbits, chickens and horses become part of daily life. After breakfast, families can even take a horse or pony for a gentle walk through the snow, first come, first served. It’s wonderfully unstructured and deeply charming.
Beyond this, the resort offers a salt sandbox for sensory play, a multi-purpose sports hall, an outdoor tennis court, ice skating, snow tubing, wellness classes and a comprehensive spa programme. We played family ice hockey, joined a complimentary Pilates session and simply enjoyed watching our children be fully present. While we didn’t make much use of the kids’ club this time, it was warm, beautifully run and full of daily activities, with childcare available upon request.
Final Verdict
POST Family Resort is the kind of place that stays with you. It doesn’t try to be everything at once. Instead, it focuses on doing the essentials exceptionally well. There’s a genuine sense of ease here, carried by the management and staff, who allow families to simply be themselves. It’s subtle, thoughtful and quietly special - the kind of family experience you’ll want to return to, again and again.
