Hosting a summer soirée? Sarah Ross of Addison Ross shares with Lucy Cocoran her expert tips on creating the perfect seasonal tablescape.

Warmer weather has declared that long lunches and outdoor brunches are officially back in season. As any host knows, there is a certain skill to serving meals al fresco, and it all begins with the right ambience. From choosing the perfect colour scheme to curating the right accessories, mastering the art of tablescaping is a must.

Discover Ross’ guide to perfecting your summer tablescape this season.

Four Must-Haves

“I’d opt for placemats, candlesticks, pretty glassware, and linen napkins. These four pieces can make up the majority of a tablescape with room left to accessorise.”

The Ideal Colour Palette

“Anything zesty and colourful works well during the summer months. Earlier this year, we hosted an event in West Hollywood and our tablescape scheme was made up of vibrant yellow, orange, and white. It felt warm and fresh for displaying a summery afternoon tea in the sunshine. Don’t be afraid to mix colours that you might initially think will clash. Combining bold colours and patterns can bring a table to life!”

Insider’s Top Tip

“For those balmy summer evenings when you want to spend every remaining moment outdoors — even when there’s a bit of a breeze —  LED candles are perfect as they don’t blow out or make a waxy mess on your table. We’ve created some wax coated LEDs that are perfect for lending authenticity to indoor and outdoor tablescapes.”

Your Four-Step Guide

  1. Choose a colour scheme. I recommend choosing a maximum of three core colours and then pairing varying hues of each to create a well-rounded tablescape.

  2. Plan the largest components that will cover your table, so the tablecloth, placemats, and crockery to base everything else around.

  3. Incorporate accents of your bolder colour through tabletop accessories such as napkin holders, coloured water tumblers, and water jugs.

  4. If you’re feeling creative, a special finishing touch is including place cards with a sprig of a herb you’ve included in your dishes attached.
