Sustainable Sybarite: Maslina Resort
Sustainable Sybarite are happy to highlight that the five-star Maslina Resort, on the island of Hvar off the coast of Croatia, is showcasing two new experiences to celebrate this years World Environment Day and World Oceans Day.
A member of the elite Relais & Chateaux group of hotels, Maslina is a contemporary, resort located near Stari Grad, one of the oldest towns in the Eastern Adriatic, fusing classic Mediterranean style with modern accents. Sustainability is the watchword of this sublime dream destination. Maslina is where the fusion of personal and professional service, a stunning natural location, and committed respect for the environment, come to life. Mindful Luxury is reflected in every detail of the guest experience, promising respectful high-end hospitality motivated by Hvar Island's rich cultural and natural heritage.
World Environment Day
World Environment Day offers the chance for guests to explore Maslina’s Organic Garden on a guided tour with Executive Chef Massimo Cvek. They will learn about Maslina’s 'garden to plate' philosophy, how menus are shaped according to the changing seasons, and why minimal food miles and leaving a small carbon footprint is so important to look after the planet.
Maslina embraces the underlying ‘protect and restore’ message of World Environment Day with a focus on its culinary commitment to organic local cuisine. Its UNESCO-protected Mediterranean Diet – produced with a modern twist and flair - respects local ingredients and producers and honours seasonality, with many ingredients harvested from the resort’s one-and-a-half-acre organic garden. The idea is to have as many local and seasonal ingredients as possible, making the journey ‘from the earth to the table’ as short as possible. Looking after the planet means leaving a legacy through the authenticity of the terroir while respecting the environment and the community.
Maslina’s commitment to sustainability also ensures:
No plastic use policy, meaning no plastic bottles
Refillable glass bottles for all room amenities (shampoo, shower gel, and cream)
All herbs, vegetables, and fruits from the Organic Garden are used in the Kitchen and Bar
Organic Linens and Coco Mattresses
Wooden bikes free to use for guests
Reusable paper for invoices and internal printing
Reused straw materials
Linen coasters
Biofilter to treat all hotel sewage
Compartmental Air Conditioning unit to save energy consumption
Sorting waste (glass, paper, and natural)
Recycling coffee grounds for garden fertiliser
Eco-cleaning products for all laundry, housekeeping, and stewarding needs
Olive trees were placed in pots and replanted, and more than 1,000 trees were added
Electric chargers for electric cars
Beach and Zone cleaning is done regularly
Donations and humanitarian actions by Maslina enhance the mindful luxury concept central to caring for the larger environment and helping people thrive. Maslina has helped to build a school in Africa, supported the football and judo club in the town of Stari Grad on Hvar Island, and sponsored local Hvar athletes, namely Olympic sailors, and triathletes. Maslina has also hosted a jazz festival with local and international artists while local designers were used to create the uniforms for staff at the resort. It is also a sponsor of The Better World Fund, which raises awareness and funds to promote humanitarian action and sustainable development worldwide.
World Ocean Day: June 8th- Celebrate with a Signature Seaweed Infused cocktail
For World Ocean’s Day, Maslina Resort is complementing its earlier culinary exploration activity with a new cocktail on its extensive drinks menu. A Seaweed Infused Collins Cocktail is designed to raise awareness of the oceans and the importance of protecting them.
The Tom Collins was created in the late 1800s and is said to have been named after a widespread practical joke that swept the country. This cocktail, however, is no joke. It is a classic of the art. The Collins is a sour cocktail made with base spirit – usually gin – lemon juice, sugar syrup, and soda water are shaken together and then poured into a large tumbler over an ample amount of crushed ice. The seaweed, sustainably sourced from the Adriatic Sea, gives a piquant saline flavour to this delicious and classically refreshing cocktail.
World Ocean’s Day June 8th-Signature Seaweed Hand Scrub at the Pharomatiq Spa
With wellness at the heart of Maslina Resort, the seaweed theme also finds expression at the Pharomatiq Spa. Guests who book a treatment will also receive a complimentary 20-minute seaweed hand scrub, which naturally detoxifies and exfoliates the skin. Inspired by Hvar’s healing environment and the Mediterranean lifestyle, surrounded by native pines, medicinal herbs, and olive trees, the Pharomatiq Spa is situated just steps away from the resort, with a modern fitness room, hair salon, and thermal wet areas with indoor and outdoor relaxation areas.
With a philosophy committed to sustainability through its Mindful Luxury philosophy means Maslina is driven by authenticity, humbleness, respect, and kindness to people and the environment. It leads by example through the promise of leaving a legacy for the generations to come.
Situated in the stunning Maslinica Bay, Maslina is surrounded by olive groves and terraced vineyards and stretches across two and a half acres of lush pine forest overlooking the crystal waters of the Adriatic Sea.
