From the baked slopes of Provence to the hustle and bustle of Rio de Janeiro, here are the best destinations to add to your list for an extra dose of sunshine this autumn...

While the mercury starts to drop as the UK teeters into autumn, there are plenty of destinations in Europe and beyond where the sun continues to cast a warm ambrosial glow. Hankering after an autumnal getaway? Keep scrolling to discover The Sybarite’s round-up of the 7 best destinations for a dose of September sunshine.

Greece

Famed for its ancient ruins, idyllic islands and superb cuisine, Greece has plenty to write home about. Although July and August are typically the hottest months, September remains beautifully warm, with temperatures reaching an average daily maximum of around 28 ºC. In the evenings, expect slightly cooler temperatures closer to around 20 ºC - the ideal temperature for al fresco dining and evening strolls. Athens aside, Greece also boasts a plethora of stunning islands, including fabled Santorini in all its blue and white glory, and lesser known islands such as Kimolos, Ithaca and Lefkada.

Italy

Italy never fails to impress with its beautifully simplistic approach to Mediterranean living. The cuisine is fresh and seasonal, the pace of life is slower, and there’s a real emphasis on il dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing). September is a wonderful time to visit Italy, with warm temperatures typically ranging from 18 ºC to 28 ºC. The north is usually on the cooler side, while popular spots in the south such as Sicily and Naples remain hot without being stifling and unbearably humid.

The Maldives

While temperatures in the Maldives stay wonderfully warm year-round (25ºC-30ºC), September marks the transition from the wet season to the dry season. The weather is typically warm and humid, with sunny spells and occasional rain showers. Although diving visibility can be reduced in September, divers from across the globe still gather for a chance to spot magnificent whale sharks and manta rays as they feed on the plankton-rich waters.

Brazil

September sees Brazil’s dry season start to draw to a close. While the temperatures are a tad cooler, the weather remains balmy and generally dry, ideal for more active pursuits such as hiking, rainforest trekking in the Amazon and horseback safaris in the Pantanal. Craving some city action? Rio de Janeiro retains much of its buzz, with fewer tourists and milder temperatures. Stroll along the fabled Copacabana Beach, or hike through the lush Morro da Urca and take the cable car to the Sugarloaf Mountain for unrivalled coastal views.

Turkey

Turkey, though still hot, is much more bearable in September. The cooler conditions are prime for exploring the country’s vast array of ancient sites, bustling cities and spellbinding coastal spots. Culture vultures should check out the Bozcaada Jazz Festival, the Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival in Antalya, and the Istanbul Biennial - a contemporary art exhibition that has been held biennially in Turkey’s capital since 1987.

France

The south of France enjoys warm temperatures in September, with average highs of 24 ºC in the day. Aside from its famed cuisine, southern regions such as Provence and Occitanie are renowned for their surfeit of whimsical castles, kaleidoscopic markets and endless fields studded with sunflowers and lavender. Beyond this, September also marks the beginning of the grape harvest season, making it a wonderful time to visit for keen oenophiles.
