About The Oscars
The Academy Awards bring together a distinguished community of artists for a showcase of pure talent and creative storytelling, anchored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Academy comprises over 10,000 film industry professionals and has 9,905 voting members as of 2024, with the voting process relying on a large professional team and committee structure behind the scenes.
The ceremony features prestigious award presentations, with winners gracefully taking to the stage to deliver an acceptance speech. Film excellence aside, the event also serves as a sartorial spectacle, with a star-studded guest list sashaying down the red carpet.
Over the years, Oscars viewership has fluctuated sharply, from over 57 million for the 70th Academy Awards to 43.56 million for the 76th, 31.76 million for the 80th, 10.4 million for the 93rd, and 16.6 million for the 94th Academy Awards. Looking ahead, the Oscars will stream on YouTube from 2029 for four years as part of a new deal.
Voting and eligibility rules shape the field, including one rule that stipulates that a feature film must be feature-length (at least 40 minutes) and must play for seven consecutive days in Los Angeles.
Studios may also position performances in leading or supporting categories to avoid direct competition, including a best supporting actor or supporting actor campaign when strategy favours that lane. Special category criteria also apply: documentary features need a week-long qualifying release in Los Angeles and New York, while Best International Feature Film requires no U.S. release, depending on the subject of the category.
