About This Grammy Awards Ceremony Experience
The Grammy Awards, presented by the academy, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, honour excellence in the recording arts and recognise artistic achievement, technical production, and overall contribution to the recording arts. At the beginning of its history, the first Grammy Awards took place on May 4, 1959, and 28 categories were presented. The evening features live performances and recognition across various genre categories, and winners receive hand-crafted gold-plated gramophone trophies, with the most coveted honours including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. Winners are voted on by members of the Recording Academy. NARAS members submit recordings as entries online during the eligibility period for year awards consideration.
Over 150 industry experts review entries for category placement. Voting members can make nominations in up to nine categories, and the five recordings with the most votes become nominees. Final voting is conducted by NARAS voting members to determine the winners. Category structures have also evolved over time, including the 2011 reduction from 109 to 78, the 2012 restructuring that removed gender distinction in solo fields, and a total number of 94 categories as of 2024.
