The hotel itself is a masterclass in Belle Époque elegance. Frescoes, trompe-l’oeil detailing and soft, nature-inspired palettes create a sense of timeless calm, while Art Nouveau flourishes, courtesy of architect Jean-Albert Hébrard add quiet drama. But the true showstopper is the view, sweeping panoramas of the lake, framed by snow-capped Alps, that shift in tone from golden morning light to dusky blues at sunset.
Where Wellness Meets Wonder: A Family Stay at Evian Resort
Perched high above Lake Geneva in the elegant spa town of Evian-les-Bains, Hôtel Royal Evian Resort feels less like a hotel and more like a living piece of European history. Originally conceived in honour of King Edward VII, it was designed to be “the most beautiful hotel in Europe” a claim that, remarkably, still holds weight over a century later.
Travelling as a family of four our Easter break began with a seamless private transfer from Geneva Airport, winding through Alpine roads for just over an hour before the hotel revealed itself, grand, serene, and impossibly cinematic. Yet nothing quite prepared us for the arrival moment, the French President, Emmanuel Macron was in residence ahead of the upcoming G7 Summit in June, and within minutes we found ourselves unexpectedly meeting him. A quick photo, a flurry of security, and wide-eyed excitement from our children Zachary and Ava, it was the kind of surreal, once-in-a-lifetime welcome that instantly set the tone.
Elegant Rooms
Our Belle Époque Suite was, quite simply, exceptional. At 94 square metres, it offers a sense of space that immediately allows you to exhale, particularly important when travelling as a family of four.
The suite was thoughtfully designed for both comfort and privacy. Adam and I had a beautifully appointed master bedroom with a king-size bed, while Zachary and Ava were delighted to discover their own dedicated space, complete with bunk beds (which had been converted from a sofa!), a detail that instantly made the stay feel like an adventure for them rather than just another hotel room.
The living area became our shared hub, opening onto multiple balconies that framed uninterrupted views of Lake Geneva.
The marble bathroom, bathed in natural daylight, carried a spa-like serenity, with a deep soaking tub, separate shower and thoughtful finishing touches, including Atelier Cologne toiletries and kids friendly bath and shower gel. Every element, from the flow of the rooms to the tactile details, felt carefully considered, making it an ideal setting for relaxed, multigenerational living.
Refined, Seasonal Food
Dining at Hôtel Royal is a leisurely, indulgent affair, never rushed, always considered. Much of our time gravitated towards La Véranda, the hotel’s relaxed yet refined restaurant, where long, sun-drenched lunches effortlessly melted into elegant dinners.
The terrace, overlooking Lake Geneva, quickly became our favourite spot; on our first afternoon, we arrived just in time for lunch in the sunshine, the alpine backdrop so striking it felt almost theatrical. Watching the children run freely across the immaculate grounds, pausing to make daisy chains, added a softness to the experience that felt both grounding and quietly luxurious.
Inside, the dining room is equally enchanting, its ceiling fresco by Marco Del Re lending an artistic, uplifting atmosphere that invites you to linger. Under the direction of Chef Yohan Fatela, the cuisine is generous, sun-filled and subtly global, rooted in seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. We feasted on everything from fresh salads topped with king prawns to roasted sea bream, tender octopus, crispy lamb and delicate ravioli, while the children happily devoured perfectly cooked steak and roasted chicken.
Breakfasts were a highlight in their own right, fresh pastries, vibrant fruits and eggs made to order, all enjoyed in light-filled surroundings that set the tone for the day ahead. For a more formal culinary experience, the resort’s Michelin-starred Les Fresques offers a refined interpretation of regional flavours, though for us, travelling as a family, La Véranda struck the perfect balance: sophisticated yet entirely welcoming, where every meal felt like a moment to savour.
We were also lucky to experience the restaurants across other hotels within the Evian Resort. Lunch at Le Chalet du Golf was one of those quietly memorable experiences that perfectly captures the spirit of the resort. Set within the Evian Resort Golf Club, the restaurant offers a relaxed, alpine-chic atmosphere with sweeping views across the fairways.
The menu is fresh and unfussy, celebrating seasonal ingredients with a lighter touch. After enjoying an Aperol Spritz, we all opted for the burger. It’s the kind of place where you can watch golfers drift past, linger over lunch, and feel in no hurry to leave. The kids enjoyed kart wheeling on the green while we enjoyed fresh summer fruits and sorbet.
Lunch and brunch at Hôtel Ermitage Evian Resort offer a softer, more rustic counterpoint to the grandeur of its sister property. Just a short stroll through the grounds, it feels instantly more intimate, almost like a hidden retreat within the wider resort.
At La Table, the atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, with a focus on generous, seasonal dishes that celebrate local produce.
Wellness Rituals
If there is a defining image of Hôtel Royal, it is surely the outdoor infinity pool. Heated and perfectly positioned, it appears to spill directly into the lake beyond, with the Alps rising dramatically in the distance.
On our first afternoon, after lunch on the terrace, we headed straight there and it was everything we’d hoped it would be. The contrast of warm water against the mountain air, the children darting between pool and Jacuzzi, and that uninterrupted view stretching endlessly ahead. It’s the kind of place where time slows without effort.
The outdoor Jacuzzi quickly became a family favourite, particularly in the early evening when the light softens and the mountains begin to glow pink.
Inside, the evianSPA offers a deeply immersive wellness experience, inspired by the extraordinary 15-year journey of evian® water as it filters through Alpine rock to emerge pure and mineral-rich. Spanning 1,700 square metres, the space includes a hydro-circuit, sauna and even a snow room, creating a multi-sensory environment designed to restore both body and mind.
What sets it apart is its inclusivity for families. The children were welcomed into the spa and absolutely loved the swim-out hydrotherapy pool. We all embraced the novelty of the snow room together, before they happily splashed around in the indoor pool during kids’ hours, while I took a moment to relax on a lounger, looking out over the immaculate grounds with a book in hand.
My own treatment, a Visage Lumière facial, was a standout. Beginning in a tranquil relaxation room, I was immersed in the story of evian® water, projected onto a domed ceiling: from its celestial origins as Alpine rain and snow, through its mineral-rich journey beneath the Gavot plateau, to its final emergence in a flow of clarity and vitality. It was a beautifully considered prelude that gently shifted the mind into a state of calm.
I was then guided into the treatment room, where a softly heated bed and the subtle sounds of the forest created an immediate sense of escape. The facial itself, an instant skin-boosting treatment combined with a massage and mask, left my skin visibly refreshed and luminous. Noticeable benefits aside, it also offered a rare moment of complete stillness.
Outstanding Sporting Experiences
What truly sets the Evian Resort apart is its ability to balance tranquillity with activity, particularly for families. There is a kids club, however with so much nature on their doorstep Zachary and Ava preferred to explore the grounds, roll down the grass verges and build bug hotels.
The tennis courts, set just beyond the main hotel, provided the perfect setting for our children’s private pickleball lesson. Under the guidance of their coach, they quickly went from tentative swings to full rallies, their confidence building with every point. It was structured yet playful, exactly what you want when introducing children to something new.
Golf, however, was the unexpected highlight. The Evian Resort Golf Club is world-renowned, not least for hosting The Amundi Evian Championship, and its setting is nothing short of spectacular.
Our private family lesson at the academy was as charming as it was memorable. Watching the children carry their own golf bags up to the driving range was a moment of pure joy. There’s something quietly magical about introducing them to a sport in such an iconic setting. We finished with a relaxed putting session, laughter outweighing competition, which felt entirely in keeping with the spirit of the trip.
Beyond this, Zachary and Ava also loved slipping off to play pool whenever they had a spare moment - a small but welcome taste of independence. The table, set beside a dedicated children’s playroom within the hotel, gave them a space of their own to unwind and have fun, while we relaxed safe in the knowledge that they were close by.
Overall Verdict
What makes Hôtel Royal Evian Resort truly stand out is how effortlessly it caters to children without ever compromising on luxury. From the moment we arrived, our children felt completely at ease. The expansive grounds gave them the freedom to run, explore and simply act their age. But the activities are where the resort really shines. From tennis and pickleball lessons to golf at the academy, everything is tailored to be engaging yet accessible, even for beginners.
Set against the extraordinary backdrop of Lake Geneva and the Alps, Hôtel Royal is more than a destination; it’s an experience that unfolds slowly, beautifully, and entirely on its own terms.
