About The Annual Governors Awards
The Governors Awards is an essential event for recognising and celebrating cinematic legacy, and the annual governors awards present three main awards at the ceremony: the Academy Honorary Award, the Hersholt award in some years, and the Thalberg memorial award, with honours presented by the Academy for exceptional contributions, extraordinary distinction, outstanding service, and lifetime achievement in the motion picture arts and sciences. The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award honours creative producers whose bodies of work reflect consistently high-quality motion picture production. In 2024, that honour was changed to an Oscar statuette. Recipients have been recognised across the industry and have included iconic film figures and humanitarian leaders.
The Governors Awards were moved out of the main Oscars framework to give honourees more focused attention and allow longer, more personal tribute speeches. It is a prestigious, star-studded evening held at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood, California. In Los Angeles, the gala is closely associated with Ovation Hollywood as part of its high-profile event setting. It is considered a key stop in awards season ahead of this year’s Academy Awards, and the Academy's Board of Governors selects the recipients annually rather than having them voted on by the wider membership. It is non-televised, but speeches are posted online.
