Stepping into Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam feels like waltzing into a living chapter of Dutch history.
Once a 15th-century convent and later the city’s former Town Hall, the building now blends centuries of heritage with warm French elegance. During our stay, we discovered not only the comfort and charm of this storied hotel, but also the quiet magic of Amsterdam at its most authentic.
Amsterdam is one of those cities that invites you to slow down, to wander at your own pace, to sit by the canals with a warm drink, to drift in and out of boutiques and cafés, and to simply be present.
For our visit, we wanted a hotel that would complement that sense of ease while immersing us in the spirit of the city. Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam offered exactly that, but it also delivered something far more enriching: an intimate encounter with a piece of Amsterdam’s living history. Housed in a 15th-century building that has been everything from a convent to royal lodgings and even the former City Hall, The Grand stands today as one of the city’s most iconic heritage hotels.
Historical Gem
To stay at the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is to step into one of the city’s most extraordinary historical landmarks. The building itself dates back to the 15th century, where it began its life as a convent before becoming royal lodgings, later the headquarters of the Admiralty, and eventually Amsterdam’s City Hall.
Today, it stands as a beautifully preserved testament to the city’s layered past, seamlessly blended with the elegance and warmth of modern French luxury. For our one-night stay in Amsterdam, The Grand felt like the perfect choice — a sanctuary that allowed us to experience the city at its most charming, while also inviting us into its remarkable history.
Plush Rooms
From the moment we entered the lobby, we felt immediately welcomed. There’s something special about the hotel’s ambiance — the soft lighting, the subtle French touches, the refined calm of a place that has seen centuries of footsteps. Check-in was effortless, and within minutes we found ourselves in our Superior Twin Room overlooking one of Amsterdam’s historical canals.
Though the room itself felt slightly dated in certain fixtures, there was something undeniably comforting about it. The standout feature was, without question, the Sofitel MyBed. Plush, cloud-like, and impossibly inviting, it offered the kind of deep, restorative sleep you rarely experience in hotels. You could simply dive into it and drift off, cocooned in softness. The spacious walk-in rain shower added to the sense of ease and became a lovely way to start the morning before exploring the city.
Central Location
One of the greatest luxuries of staying at The Grand is its location. Nestled between two tranquil canals and only a short stroll from the city centre, it made our entire Amsterdam experience accessible and relaxed. For first-time visitors like us, being able to wander through the streets, dip into little cafés, browse boutiques, and admire the canals without needing taxis or complex routes felt like such a time-saver. This meant that we were able to enjoy our version of Amsterdam at a slower, more graceful pace with ease.
Food and Drink
Breakfast quickly became another highlight of our stay. Served at the hotel’s elegant restaurant, The Grand, the à la carte experience felt thoughtful. We loved indulging in a selection of local and international dishes — from dim sums to Dutch pancakes, this provided us just the right amount of sustenance before heading out for our morning stroll along the canals.
The Charming Details
What makes The Grand particularly fascinating is the way history reveals itself as you walk through its corridors. Its inner courtyard for example, was once part of the convent’s garden, and still carries a serenity that feels worlds away from the bustle outside. And then there’s the sentimental detail that Queen Beatrix was married here when the building served as Amsterdam’s City Hall. The hotel also houses an impressive collection of contemporary Dutch art, creating a compelling contrast between centuries-old architecture and modern creativity.
For anyone planning a stay, I would wholeheartedly recommend choosing a canal-facing room for the views alone. Breakfast is something you shouldn’t skip; it genuinely enhances the experience. And if time permits, take a slow walk through the courtyard or unwind at the hotel’s intimate spa — both offer a quiet and welcome pause amidst the vibrancy of Amsterdam.
Final Thoughts
Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam manages to occupy a rare space: part luxury hotel, part living museum, and wholly dedicated to the comfort of its guests. What it may lack in cutting-edge modernity, it more than makes up for in depth, character, and soul.
Our stay felt like a gentle step into Amsterdam’s history, wrapped in the warmth of thoughtful hospitality. For travellers seeking an experience that is both meaningful and indulgent, The Grand stands as a beautiful choice — timeless, elegant, and unforgettable in its own understated way.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been a decade since the world lost David Bowie, a performer known as much for his musical talent as for his flamboyant dress sense, chameleon-like approach to identity and queer-forward ways of thinking and living. Bowie captured the imaginations of a generation - and continues to do so, ten years after his death.
