Women Who Launch: Chatting with Florence Macovei &...
8th March 2023
“I’m not going to lie, the fashion industry is very focused on who you know,” says Florence Macovei, who spent years building her little black book of contacts whilst working as a model and hostess for brands such as Hermes, Ferrari, Cartier, and Bulgari. “If you have the right connections, you can have very big advantages. The contacts and knowledge I’ve made definitely helped me through my entrepreneurial journey,” she adds. However, it wasn’t just contacts that helped Macovei when she pivoted from fashion insider to founder. Her keen ability to unlock what women want has allowed her to launch AFTERHOURS, a fashion brand which makes incredibly wearable, sleek, and sophisticated clothes for the modern woman. I recently road-tested the AFTERHOURS oversized linen shirt on a trip to Mexico and it was the perfect item to wear over my swimsuit whilst still staying fresh and stylish on the beach. Whether it’s breathable fabrics or flattering silhouettes, Macovei has a deep understanding of her customers’ needs and also leveraged her own experiences to build her first collections. “I always looked for clothes that were luxurious yet affordable while being versatile, and I always struggled, so that’s why I decided to start AFTERHOURS,” she shares. In this edition of Women Who Launch, we speak with Macovei about the mentors who provide a guiding light as she builds her brand and the piece she loves most from her current collection.

Footballers arrive at grounds wearing them. Gamers are never out of them. Kids communicate with their parents in sign language from under them. Sonic ear muffs or headphones are de rigeur. We all need a hearing aid at some time in our lives. For various reasons. To be able to hear some things some people say. Sometimes. And to enjoy music. Or silence. The sort of headphone you choose to wear over or around your ears depends largely on the size of your wallet and your head and how much you appreciate music and value silence. Gary Lineker, Martin Keown, Owen Hargreaves, Rio Ferdinand and Alan Shearer have one thing in common. They are noise irritants. At times, they need to be silenced. Is there such a thing as high-quality, high-fidelity silence? Certainly, especially when you have neighbours who have just been granted planning permission to demolish their home and rebuild it. If you work from home as I do – or pretend to – there is nothing worse or less conducive to getting things done than a cement mixer and pneumatic drill going full blast less than twenty yards from your laptop. These days it is called noise pollution. I still know it as “a ‘kin din”.

Discover Aveda’s Nutriplenish hair care system at this...
20th March 2020
Just this year Suranne Jones, Dame Mary Beard, Dame Joan Bakewell, Sue Perkins, Sharlene Spiteri and Anna Richardson have walked through the doors and walked out looking fabulous! And in February it was transformed into a picture-perfect Christmas scene for a set in Dame Maggie Smith's latest film which will be out next Christmas. My experience was once again lovely and relaxing, my colour rich and my cut perfect. This year has also seen the launch of their newest product line - Nutriplenish Hair Care System. Nutriplenish is by far one of Aveda’s most innovative and luxurious product lines yet - it is nutrient-powered hydration at the highest level. If you’re on the hunt for serious moisture and hydration, then this is the product line for you. This six-piece system has something for everyone and every hair type, so it’s versatile and customizable. If you have fine to medium hair like me then the light moisture option is for you. If you have medium to thick hair, then the deep moisture option will be perfect for you.
My London Fashion Week - VanillaOnTop
2nd March 2019
"A week full of inspiration and breathtaking designs; bloggers, press, designers ,as well as clients from all over the world, come to see the new Autumn/Winter 2019 collections at the two London Fashion Weeks held each year. Me and my sister Tiia Camilla Pötry, also known as my manager, had the honour to attend several fashion shows and presentations including the Junne, Kalissi, and Magpies & Peacocks shows. Magpies & Peacocks showed their new collection created from upcycled textiles. It was truly inspiring and interesting to see the perfect hand prints featured in every design. Kalissi took us into a different world; such a colourful and surreal show! It was high fashion with a brave twist and powerful statements. Many pastel shades, as well as different textures like tweed and silk, were surrounding us the entire evening. One of many astounding elements was the exceptional colourful headpieces worn on the catwalk. Hats and turbans made from silk or fur were crucial elements this year in many of the shows.

The 88th Academy Awards may not have pulled in the viewing numbers but it made history in many other ways and the parties were legendary.
