Five of the World’s Best Literary Destinations

trinity college library

Sarah Rodrigues explores the concept of literary tourism and shines a spotlight on five global destinations linked to notable authors or protagonists.

'Getting lost in the pages of a book’ is an expression that resonates with many: books allow us to enter other worlds and other experiences - and the memories often linger far beyond the final chapter.

So it’s unsurprising that the popularity of literary tourism has surged in recent years. Readers are no longer content to simply escape into a book: they want to step into the world of the author, or...

The Adria: A Discreet Sanctuary in South Kensington

31st October 2025

Tucked away on a peaceful, tree-lined street in the heart of South Kensington, The Adria feels like you've been handed the keys to a private London townhouse. The moment I stepped through its elegant white stucco façade, I was enveloped by a sense of quiet luxury. There’s something about the atmosphere here: refined yet unpretentious, curated but comforting.

A Serene Spa Break at South Lodge

Why Autumn is the Best Time to Fall for Florence

24th October 2025

The birthplace of the Renaissance still feels like a city designed to be walked: compact, layered and dense with art. In cooler months, when crowds thin and the heat drops from the stone, it’s easier to see how much of its beauty lies in the details: the worn fresco in a church corner, the clang of a bicycle on cobbles, the first sip of espresso that cuts through the morning haze.

Serenity in Sintra: Penha Longa Resort

23rd October 2025

Penha Longa Resort occupies a serene spot against bucolic Sintra’s rolling hills. With two golf courses, enchanting woodland trails and seven restaurants, this pretty patch of Portugal feels like a destination in itself. But it is a luxurious base to explore the wider cultural landmarks of Cascais and the hubbub of the more well-trodden Lisbon.

Luxury Things to Do in Paris in Winter 2026

21st October 2025

Paris in winter feels different from the postcard-perfect snapshots you see splashed across magazines. The Seine and the bridges aren’t as crowded, and the city slows down without ever really stopping. But Paris is still Paris, no matter the season. There’s still music pouring out of churches, windows glinting with gold displays, steam rising when someone cracks open a chestnut bag on the corner. Every hotel lobby boasts a roaring fireplace, there's ice skating at the Grand Palais, and cosy dinners that stretch into the evening. Winter certainly doesn’t dim Paris's magic, it simply shows the city in a different light.

The Ultimate Guide to Luxury Arctic Cruises

17th October 2025

The Arctic isn’t a last-minute destination that you can book in a hurry. Planning is absolutely vital. People fly halfway around the world just to see the vast expanse of frosted white stretching in every direction. During the summer months, a phenomenon known as "midnight sun" occurs where the sun never sets below the horizon. In winter, meanwhile, darker skies take hold, providing the ultimate backdrop for the fabled northern lights. While the landscape is unforgettable, what makes this destination particularly special is the journey itself, particularly aboard a luxury cruise ship. These striking vessels are built to slip through the ice while keeping travellers toasty and warm. Read on to discover The Sybarite's guide to the best luxury Arctic cruises.

Top 5 Best Places to See Cherry Blossoms in Japan

14th October 2025

Japan during the spring months is a sight to behold. Travellers and locals alike flock to see the bursts of pink that take hold as the cherry blossom season sets in. The first bloom takes place in the south, before sweeping north until the whole country is carpeted in pink petals. While you might be tempted to chalk it up as "just flowers", cherry blossom season in Japan is a one-of-a-kind spectacle. Parks turn into temporary dining halls with lanterns strung up in the trees, and supermarkets start filling their shelves with blossom-themed goodies (sake, snacks, and pretty much every sweet treat under the sun). Viewing these cherry blossoms is known as hanami. At its core, the custom, which translates to "flower viewing", is a time for celebration and reflection. It provides the perfect excuse to gather and appreciate the finer things in life.

Living Inside an Artwork: A Stay at NEW Hotel, Athens

10th October 2025

Athens has always been a city of contrasts. Ancient marble temples stand beside neon lit bars, history collides with modernity, and every street seems to hum with possibility. I thought I knew it well until I checked into NEW Hotel. What I found was not a hotel in the traditional sense, but a living canvas, a place where art and hospitality merge so seamlessly that you stop being just a guest and start becoming part of the story. By the time I left, Athens felt different to me, sharper, more vibrant, more alive. That is the effect of NEW Hotel: it changes how you see the city itself.

Casa Talia: A Journey into Slow Living

1st October 2025

There exists a quiet dream whispered by the soul of every city dweller: to trade the concrete rush for the rhythm of nature, to replace the digital glow with the warmth of the sun. For Marco and Viviana, two architects from Milan, this dream began as a fleeting thought of a Tuscan farmhouse. But as fate spun its most beautiful thread, their journey led them to a rugged, forgotten land and to a place that was not merely to be built, but to be felt, experienced, and loved—a place where they would rediscover the very essence of life and of themselves.

Hotel Château du Grand-Lucé: Serenity in the Loire Valley

21st October 2024

From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the sheer elegance of this 18th-century château, once the summer retreat of Baron Jacques Pineau de Viennay. Meticulously restored, it whispers stories of a bygone era whilst offering every indulgence a modern traveller could wish for. Stepping through its grand doors felt like entering a living museum, yet it is far from austere. The neoclassical architecture by Mathieu de Bayeux exudes sophistication, but what struck us most was the château’s surprising sense of warmth. American designer Timothy Corrigan’s restoration has been nothing short of masterful, and Paul and Shannon Wehsener have subtly reimagined the interiors with impeccable taste. Every room tells a tale, with Pierre Frey and de Gournay wallpapers adorning the walls, seamlessly paired with both antique treasures and modern comforts. The guest rooms are a sanctuary in themselves. We stayed in one of the 19 individually appointed rooms, where the original oak parquet floors and high ceilings enveloped us in serenity. The large casement windows opened onto stunning views of the formal French gardens – waking up to the sight of manicured hedgerows glimmering with dew was an experience in itself. The bed, dressed in the finest Pratesi linens, felt like sinking into a cloud, while the marble-clad bathroom with its clawfoot tub was the perfect retreat after a day spent exploring.

Saint Ten Belgrade: The Hotel Living Its Second Life

30th October 2023

Despite having a rich history, a thriving food scene, buzzing nightlife, and beautiful nature in its vicinity, Belgrade — the capital and largest city of Serbia — is often overlooked as a tourist destination. Granted, it’s not the prettiest of cities — brutalist architecture brought about after World War II makes up most of New Belgrade — but both its people and its culture have a warmth that often comes as a surprise to visitors. Serbia was ruled by the Ottoman Empire for nearly five hundred years, and one of Belgrade’s most notable landmarks, Kalemegdan, is Turkish for “fortress field”. After World War I, Serbia became part of the former Yugoslavia and fought in the brutal Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s before it finally declared independence in 2006. The scars of these battles are still visible in Belgrade today; NATO-bombed buildings still stand on the side of Kneza Milosa and the Museum of Yugoslavia holds many artefacts and stories about those who lived through these troubled times. Perhaps Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andrić put it best when he said: “This grand city seems to have always been like this: torn and split, as if it never exists but is perpetually being created, built upon and recovered.” Reinvention is a common theme in Belgrade —from the fortresses and boats that turn into night clubs when the sun goes down, to the inventions exhibited in the Nikola Tesla Museum, the city is bursting with examples of how Serbs have been masters of transformation. Tucked away on a quiet street in the Vracar neighbourhood, Saint Ten hotel is one of the capital’s buildings that’s living its second life.

Review of Relax at Minos Beach

25th October 2022

Beach holidays can be very undifferentiated. It could easily be filled with endless sun-bed reading and tick-box buffet food. Minos Beach Art Hotel in Crete offers a unique, inspiring experience on the other hand. Culture plays an important role in this 5-star resort. The hotel opened in 1963 but you will struggle to find any remote hint of the 60s anywhere on its grounds. The hotel is constantly renovating and if anything, the resemblance is more towards Tate Modern galleries rather than a retro Greek resort. The hotel is a member of Design Hotels and you feel it's most deserving the moment you step into the lobby. There's Giorgos Gyparakis' 1-sec art installation by the reception wall with intricate waveforms highlighting the increasing digitalisation of society.

Featuring Grand Hotel Kronenhof: Winter Luxury Staycation

6th October 2022

Except you are not in Budapest, but in the scenic, tranquil alpine escape that is Pontresina. Think neighbouring St Moritz but without the Prada shop pretensions. This is a mountain village lined with iconic Belle Epoque hotels and authentic Engadine stone houses with ornate facades. This grande dame of Engadine hotels is the heart and soul of the village and has been welcoming guests since 1848. The personalised service means they've been getting repeat guests for decades; some came as children and then returned with their children. They've had an extensive renovation in 2021 with the award-winning French interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. The reception, lobby lounge, bar and reading room have all been rejuvenated to tranquil shades of blue that reflect the Engadine sky during various times of the day. You have to applaud their attention to every minutia as even the coffee table books are in hues of blue. The focal point here isn't the regal chandelier or the antique furniture, it's the lush majestic mountains of the Engadine Alps that take centre stage through the almost floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

Featuring The ultimate indoor outdoor living luxury

18th October 2016

Mud, musty tents, cold weather, cooking on rusty gas stoves, sweaty sleeping bags...needless to say, camping has never held much appeal here at The Sybarite. Until that is, we became acquainted with the Autonomous Tent -  a stunning semi-permanent structure designed by fabulous architects such as Patricia DiMario and Harry Gesner (whose famous Cooper Wave House design inspired the Sydney Opera House). The exquisitely-designed yet sustainable solar powered tent (although to call it a tent is akin to calling champagne a fizzy drink - a major understatement) can be enjoyed anywhere, all year round without detriment to our planet's ecosystems. The tent comes in two sizes: $100,000 for the smaller, 700-square-foot Cocoon version and $200,000 for the 1,000-square-foot, two bedroom Tipi. The latter is more able to withstand heavy winds and snow, owing to it being constructed from either sturdy steel/aluminium tubes or laminated beams that are made out of hi-tech, rot, and mildew-resistant fabrics.

Featuring A different kind of escape in the Loire Valley

14th October 2015

An estate spanning 1400 acres takes you back in time to a place of complete serenity, nature and purity – even pictures don’t do justice to the beauty of Les Bordes. Located in the heart of the Loire Valley, the estate is made up of the 20th-century Château Bel Air featuring eight suites, a restaurant in a glass orangery and a cigar, whisky and wine bar. In addition to a cosy clubhouse, there is a spa and wellness centre under the canopy of trees, accompanied by swimming pools, tennis courts and a gym. Need more convincing? How about lighting up a fine cigar while sipping on some rare whisky complemented by a delectable meal in the Club du Baron? According to Les Bordes, ‘It’s the feeling of homecoming as you sink into an armchair beside grand, leaping fires. The way the outside world fades away – and all that matters are the people around your table.’  But if you would rather take refuge in a good book or a play a game, the clubhouse has a library and games room.

The adventure lasts 15 days, departing from Beijing and Moscow, with expected stops including Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude and Ulaanbaatar, among others. The experience will be very unique, as guests will be able to travel the normally closed original route of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and be accommodated in one of Tsar Gold’s five cabin categories, ranging from four berth cabins to luxury cabins with en suite facilities. The views are, without question, spectacular. One example is the frontier between Mongolia and Russia, which also happens to be an immigration stop-point with a twist: Passengers can literally present their passports while in their sleepwear, as immigration officials board the train.

Featuring Experience spectacular views of planet Earth by Bloon

6th October 2015

It’s a near-space flight that takes you to the edge of the atmosphere, now bookable at a price tag of €110,000 and lifting off as early as 2016 (or 2017 at the latest). The journey takes approximately four hours, commencing with a countdown to vertical lift-off lasting about 10 minutes, as the bloon begins its ascent from the Earth’s surface to an altitude of 36km. At this point the bloon cruises at a constant altitude, providing spectacular views of the planet. Finally, there is the venting phase, which enables the bloon to descend onto its predefined landing area for sail separation. So, why use a balloon for this exciting flight experience? According to the company, there are three reasons: ‘Safety, experience and environmental impact. The oldest type of flying machine known, the balloon, is inherently safer than other forms of high-altitude flight. By using a pod with a balloon we create a softer and more pleasant journey.

Featuring Rio: The city with art and Jazz at heart

6th October 2015

Today, its international profile is rising with the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics games, and it’s not just sports fans who have their eye on this vibrant city. Art exhibitions put on here are among the world's most-attended, while both Rio and Sao Paolo have art fairs and talent strong enough to rival any emerging cultural hotspot. Last year, Brazillian artist Beatriz Milhazes' set a new record for Brazilian art, selling a piece for $2.1 million at a Sotheby's auction in New York. A host of new international galleries single the city out as the must-see destination for any global art connoisseur: Emmanuel Hervé (Paris), Société (Berlin) and Thomas Brambilla (Milan,) are some who have made Rio their next home. A perfect time to experience this vibrant city can begin with ArtRio, Rio’s first contemporary international art fair launched in 2010. Every September, a week is packed with stimulating events and private dinners; those looking for a truly exclusive experience may want to brush shoulders with the most exciting creative minds and the glitterati of the city at the black-tie gala ball held at MAR, one of the city’s leading contemporary art museums.
